Job description

Engine Test & Calibration Engineer
This role is fully onsite in Bloomfield, CT, five days per week, and the company will be relocating to Suffield, CT later in 2026.
Company Summary
LiquidPiston is a leader in advanced power solutions, developing innovative, compact, and efficient rotary engines based on its breakthrough High-Efficiency Hybrid Cycle (HEHC). Our technology enables significant improvements in power density, fuel efficiency, and multi-fuel capability across defense, aerospace, commercial, and industrial applications. At LiquidPiston, we challenge the limits of conventional engine design and build next-generation propulsion systems that are smaller, lighter, and more efficient. We are a fast-paced, collaborative, and mission-driven team passionate about redefining what’s possible in power and mobility.
Position Overview
The Engine Test & Calibration Engineer will be a part of the team responsible for testing, calibration, and data analysis for LiquidPiston’s advanced rotary engines. This is a hands-on, high-ownership role where you will be responsible for the operation of engine test cells from hardware and controls to data quality and calibration development.
You will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to plan and execute test campaigns, develop control strategies, automate data workflows, and optimize engine performance across various fuels and operating conditions.
Responsibilities
  • Take ownership of engine dynamometer test cell operation, maintenance, and output quality.
  • Design, build, and maintain engine test setups, including instrumentation and control systems.
  • Plan and execute test programs with performance engineers to evaluate engine performance, durability, and emissions.
  • Lead or assist in engine assembly and collaborate closely with a test technician (including hands-on work when needed).
  • Calibrate rotary engines for diesel and gasoline operation with a focus on performance and emissions optimization.
  • Modify and manage DAQ and control systems for engine control and data acquisition.
  • Debug and resolve mechanical, electrical, or software issues affecting test or calibration workflows.
  • Collaborate with design and controls engineers to improve engine hardware and control strategies.
  • Drive continuous improvements in test and calibration processes, tools, and documentation.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in engine testing, calibration, or powertrain development.
  • Hands-on experience with engine dynamometer operation and test cell environments.
  • Proficiency with DAQ systems (e.g., LabVIEW, ATI, ETAS, DEWESoft, or similar).
  • Strong understanding of combustion engines, thermodynamics, and control systems.
  • Experience calibrating engines for diesel, gasoline, or multi-fuel operation.
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and software issues in test environments.
  • Proficiency with data analysis tools (e.g., MATLAB, Python, Excel, or equivalent).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced, hands-on R&D environment.
Benefits & Perks
  • Flexible PTO: We value work-life balance and encourage time to rest and recharge.
  • Health & Wellness: Comprehensive medical and voluntary dental, and vision coverage - you choose what works best for you.
  • Equity Participation: Permanent employees receive RSUs (Restricted Stock Units).
  • 401(k) Match: We offer a 401k w/100% matching up to 3% of your salary and then 50% of contributions between 3-5%
  • Career Growth: Ongoing training, mentorship, and learning opportunities to accelerate your growth.
