Volunteer Development Manager information

What does a volunteer development manager do?

A Volunteer Development Manager is responsible for recruiting, training, and supporting volunteers within an organization. They develop strategies to attract new volunteers, ensure proper onboarding, and provide ongoing training and recognition programs. Their goal is to create a positive and engaging environment that enables volunteers to contribute effectively and feel valued. This role often involves collaborating with other departments, evaluating volunteer performance, and implementing best practices for volunteer management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a volunteer development manager?

To thrive as a Volunteer Development Manager, you need expertise in volunteer recruitment, program coordination, and a background in nonprofit management or a related field. Familiarity with volunteer management software, data tracking systems, and occasionally a certification in volunteer administration (such as CVA) is highly beneficial. Exceptional interpersonal skills, leadership, and the ability to motivate and communicate effectively with diverse groups are crucial soft skills. These abilities ensure successful volunteer engagement, program sustainability, and the achievement of organizational goals.

A Volunteer Development Manager often works closely with departments such as Human Resources, Communications, and Program Management to create a cohesive volunteer experience. They coordinate with HR to ensure proper onboarding and training, partner with Communications to promote volunteer opportunities, and liaise with Program Managers to match volunteers with suitable roles. This cross-departmental collaboration helps streamline processes, increase volunteer retention, and ensure that organizational goals are met through effective volunteer support.

Job description

Job Title: Talent Development Manager

Location: Palo Alto, CA (Hybrid)
Duration: 6 + Months

Hours Per Week:20

Schedule Notes: Required to be onsite first day of each week (Monday regularly. Tuesday if Monday is a holiday).

Talent Development & Inclusion team is looking for a contractor to own the Palo Alto and Americas New Hire Orientation experience and drive TD&I measurement and insights, while supporting learner-centered design across the team''s programs. You''ll be the in-person face of Day 1 for new hires in Palo Alto, own the survey and feedback infrastructure that tells us whether our programs are working, and turn that data into insights the broader team can act on. You will partner closely with the Global TD&I team and with Palo Alto-based HRBPs, People Partners, and leaders.

What You''ll Own & Deliver

Day 1 Ambassador for Americas: Redesign and facilitate in-person New Hire Orientation in Palo Alto (45 minutes each Monday in office), ensuring it reflects our culture, AI-native direction, and multi-product platform.

  • New Hire Orientation (NHO) Strategy & Playbook: Own the NHO strategy globally – define what''s next and fresh, refine content, codify "how we run orientation," and enable a small bench of volunteer facilitators from across functions.
  • TD&I Measurement & Insights: Drive a cohesive measurement strategy for the team. Administer Talent Development and Inclusion surveys and occasional 360 feedback surveys; build and maintain instruments, manage cycles, and ensure clean data flows. Build and maintain the TD&I scorecard (talent density signals, program reach, manager metrics, inclusion of AI practices where relevant). Analyze feedback and usage data to generate insights on learner experience and recommend changes that increase engagement and business relevance.
  • Event Production: Act as event producer for quarterly Palo Alto and Americas learning events, bringing creativity and excellence to create a great experience for Rubrikans (e.g., local development sessions and manager programs).
  • Light Consulting Support: Provide occasional light consulting support to Palo Alto-based HRBPs, People Partners, and leaders on how to use Talent Development and Inclusion signature offerings (NHO, AI learning events, Development Days, manager programs, top talent programs, async resources, and more) to address their specific needs.
  • AI-Literate Execution: Bring a highly AI-literate lens to all of this work to accelerate impact.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor''s degree in a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience.
