What is a Volunteer Crisis Text Line counselor?

Volunteer Crisis Text Line counselors are trained individuals who provide free, confidential support to people experiencing emotional distress or crises through text messaging. They help texters navigate difficult situations, such as anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, or other mental health challenges, by offering empathy, active listening, and problem-solving strategies. Volunteers may also encounter situations where they feel uncertain about the best way to support a texter in crisis. To manage these challenges, volunteers are encouraged to utilize training resources, seek support from on-shift supervisors, and participate in debriefing sessions or peer support groups. Regular self-care and setting boundaries are also essential practices to maintain emotional well-being and effectiveness in the role.
