Volunteer Crisis Counselors are trained individuals who provide immediate emotional support, active listening, and resources to people experiencing a mental health crisis or emotional distress. They typically work with crisis hotlines, text lines, or online platforms, helping callers or texters navigate intense feelings, mental health struggles, or difficult situations. Their main role is to offer empathy, de-escalate crises, and connect individuals with professional help or community resources if needed. Volunteers receive specialized training to ensure they can respond effectively and sensitively to a wide range of situations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a volunteer crisis counselor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Volunteer Crisis Counselor, you need strong active listening skills, crisis intervention training, and a basic understanding of mental health principles. Familiarity with crisis text or call platforms and completion of relevant training or certification programs are typically required. Emotional resilience, empathy, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure that counselors can provide effective, compassionate support to individuals in crisis, often making a critical difference during urgent situations.

Job description

Overview:

Some careers are just jobs. This one is different. At Georgia HOPE, the work you do every day creates meaningful change for children, families, and individuals who need it most.

We're a Georgia-based behavioral health provider on a mission to instill hope, empower lives, and strengthen communities. Our team specializes in supporting individuals facing emotional and behavioral challenges—often those who have experienced trauma, instability, or significant life stressors. We deliver services directly in the homes, schools, and communities where our clients live and grow, because real progress happens when care is personalized, strengths-focused, and meets people where they are.

As part of the Health Connect America family—a COA-accredited organization serving children, families, and adults across nine states—you'll have the resources, support, and professional development of a larger organization, paired with the close-knit, mission-focused culture that defines our work.

If you’re looking for a career where your impact is visible, your growth is supported, and your work truly matters, you’ll find it here.

Responsibilities:

If you're someone who believes meaningful change happens through strong therapeutic relationships, evidence-based care, and meeting people where they are, this role was built for you.

As a Therapist at Georgia HOPE, you’ll provide clinical services that empower individuals and families to navigate challenges, build resilience, and achieve lasting emotional and behavioral health outcomes.

What You’ll Do

As a Therapist, you’ll deliver comprehensive, clinically sound mental health services across a diverse population. Your work will be assessment-driven, treatment-focused, and centered on measurable progress. Day to day, you can expect to:

• Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments and develop individualized, goal-oriented treatment plans
• Deliver evidence-based therapy services through individual, group, and family sessions to address a range of mental health needs
• Maintain consistent engagement with clients, monitoring progress and adjusting treatment approaches as clinically indicated
• Provide crisis intervention, including risk assessment, safety planning, and coordination with emergency supports when needed
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and connect clients to community resources to ensure holistic, coordinated care
• Complete accurate, timely documentation and maintain compliance with all regulatory, ethical, and organizational standards

What to Expect

This role may be clinic-based, community-based, or a hybrid of both, depending on program needs. You’ll manage a clinical caseload with a mix of scheduled sessions and responsive client care, including occasional crisis support. Success in this role requires strong clinical judgment, organization, and the ability to build trust with individuals and families from diverse backgrounds. You’ll work as part of a collaborative team while maintaining autonomy in your clinical approach, with ongoing support through supervision, training, and professional development opportunities.

Qualifications:

We welcome candidates who bring a genuine commitment to children and families and meet the following qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work, Counseling, or a related field is required.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience working with children and/or families, which may include internships.
  • Must be eligible for professional licensure in the state of Georgia as a LPC, LMFT, or LCSW.
