Job description

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Pediatric Rehabilitation Volunteer will support therapy services under the
supervision of licensed therapists/clinicians. This volunteer program is designed to
provide exposure to pediatric rehabilitation while integrating academic knowledge with
practical experience. Volunteers will observe and assist in a multidisciplinary setting,
contributing to both patient care support and behind-the-scenes operations, while
gaining observation hours in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech-Language
Pathology, and Recreational Therapy.

VOLUNTEER PROGRAM STRUCTURE:
• The Rehabilitation Volunteer Program is designed to correspond with academic
calendars and accommodate students’ educational commitments.
• The Fall Volunteer Program runs from August 31, 2026 to November 20, 2026
(12 weeks total), with a minimum commitment of 8 hours per week, totaling 96
hours.
• Rehabilitation Volunteers will follow a consistent weekly schedule to support
continuity for both the volunteers and the therapy team; this schedule will be
determined in alignment with business needs but will also align with the
student’s academic class schedule for that semester.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Assist licensed therapists/clinicians during therapy sessions through observation
and supervised support tasks.
2. Help with the preparation and clean-up of therapy equipment and materials
used in sessions.
3. Provide support to multiple departments, including physical, occupational, and
speech therapy, assistive technology, and recreational therapy.
4. Engage positively with patients and families while maintaining professional
boundaries and referring clinical questions to licensed staff.
5. Assist with clerical duties such as organizing therapy materials, printing
educational handouts, and maintaining documentation systems.
6. Participate in learning opportunities such as case reviews, staff meetings, and
training sessions as appropriate.
7. Maintain patient confidentiality according to HIPAA guidelines and CRIT policy.
8. Exhibit professional behavior, effective communication skills, and teamwork at
all times.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Observe and understand the day-to-day operations of a pediatric rehabilitation
facility, including interdisciplinary teamwork and patient-centered care delivery.
2. Gain foundational knowledge of therapeutic disciplines including Physical
Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech-Language Pathology, Assistive
Technology, and Recreational Therapy through structured observation and staff
interactions.
3. Apply academic concepts from coursework in real-world settings by participating
in supervised non-clinical tasks that support therapy sessions and patient care
logistics.
4. Develop professional communication and collaboration skills by interacting with
therapists, technicians, and families in a pediatric healthcare environment.
5. Strengthen organizational and administrative skills through supporting tasks such
as preparing therapy materials, assisting with equipment setup and cleanup, and
clerical duties.
6. Participate in guided learning opportunities including clinician Q amp;A sessions,
team meetings, and informal case discussions to enhance understanding of
clinical reasoning, human development, disease processes, and therapeutic
planning.
7. Reflect on professional interests and career goals through direct exposure to
therapy-related roles and responsibilities in pediatric rehabilitation.

VOLUNTEER SPECIFICATIONS:
A. KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:
1. Enrollment in an undergraduate program or recent graduate in any major with a
demonstrated interest in health sciences or pediatric rehabilitation.

regardless of their insurance or ability to pay

an undergraduate program with any major with a demonstrated interest in
health sciences or pediatric rehabilitation.
