Job description

Job Title: Extrusion Operator

Job Description

The Extrusion Operator safely and efficiently operates extrusion line equipment, overseeing setup, startup, troubleshooting, quality verification, and continuous production. This role demands strong attention to detail, strict adherence to safety and food regulations, and the flexibility to work overtime when needed.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate extrusion line equipment in accordance with production schedules, bills of materials (BOM), and standard operating conditions (SOC).
  • Select, install, and verify the proper tooling and resin for each production run.
  • Start up equipment, position controls correctly, and perform initial product testing to confirm proper operation.
  • Monitor production throughout the shift, make process adjustments as needed, and troubleshoot equipment or process issues to minimize downtime.
  • Perform quality control checks to ensure that products consistently meet required specifications and standards.
  • Package, label, and store finished products accurately and safely, and enter production data into the appropriate systems with precision.
  • Clean, return, and stock tooling, packaging materials, and other production supplies to maintain an organized work area.
  • Maintain full compliance with food safety regulations and workplace safety standards at all times.
  • Train Level 1 operators after completing the 90-day Certified Progression Program (CPP), sharing best practices and safe operating procedures.

Essential Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to work overtime, including some weekends, as production demands require.
  • Proficiency in using rulers and hand tachometers for measurement and speed verification.
  • Ability to read and convert Metric and U.S. Customary measurements to the nearest 1/4 inch or millimeter.
  • Basic math skills for measurements, conversions, and production calculations.
  • Basic computer skills for data entry and production reporting.
  • Ability to lift up to 90 pounds safely and repeatedly as part of regular duties.
  • Ability to read and comprehend English to follow work instructions, safety procedures, and quality standards.
  • Self-motivation with strong attention to detail, ensuring accurate setup, operation, and documentation.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience using calipers and micrometers for precise dimensional measurements.
  • Mechanical aptitude or prior manufacturing experience, particularly in machine operation or extrusion processes.
  • Experience in machine operating, machine setup, and general production work.
  • Experience with packaging processes in a manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with basic machine maintenance tasks to support reliable operation.

Work Environment

This role is based in a manufacturing environment with varying temperatures and exposure to dust, fumes, and odors. Team members may encounter mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards and must consistently follow safety protocols. Personal protective equipment is required and includes safety shoes, safety glasses, bump caps, gloves, hearing protection, and task-specific equipment such as a respirator when applicable. The typical schedule is Monday through Friday with overtime on some weekends, and positions are available on second and third shifts. The environment is production-focused and hands-on, with regular interaction with extrusion equipment and related machinery.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Roanoke, VA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $19.40 - $19.40/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
