Job description

Openwork is proud to partner with a mission-driven organization that is transforming the lives of youth in foster care. We’re looking for dedicated individuals who want to make a real impact.

Academic Coach
The Academic Coaching Program empowers youth and young adults ages 14–25 who are currently in foster care or have aged out of the system. Through personalized academic support and the development of essential life skills—including organization, time management, and study strategies—the program equips participants to achieve academic success and build a foundation for the future. The program serves a large geographic area, including all of Harris County and the 12 surrounding counties (Zip codes include 77088, 77051, 77091)

Position Overview
Reporting to the Volunteer Engagement Coordinator, the Academic Coach plays a vital role in delivering tutoring and skill-building services. You’ll work directly with students both individually and in group settings, providing consistent encouragement and guidance. Coaching may take place in person at Residential Treatment Centers, virtually, or in a combination of formats based on each student’s needs. All Academic Coaches receive training to maintain a high standard of service delivery. A proprietary agreement will be required as part of the onboarding process. (STARTS IN AUGUST when school resumes)

We are looking to start someone by August 25th, so early applicants are encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver academic coaching and tutoring to youth in foster care.
    • Support students with homework, class assignments, and preparation for exams.
    • Help students strengthen executive functioning skills such as time management and study habits.
  • Conduct one-on-one tutoring sessions either in person or virtually.
  • Lead in-person group sessions at designated locations.
  • Travel regularly to assigned tutoring sites throughout Houston, Harris County, and the surrounding counties.
  • Maintain clear, accurate records of student attendance, academic progress, and coaching outcomes.
  • Ensure all required forms and assessments are completed and updated in a timely manner.
  • Participate in scheduled trainings, team meetings, and HAY Center events as needed.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; candidates with some college coursework will also be considered.
  • Experience tutoring or mentoring youth ages 14 and older.
  • Proficiency in core academic subjects, including higher-level math, science, and language arts.
  • Reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license, and current auto liability insurance.
  • Availability during after-school hours (Monday–Thursday).
  • Access to a personal computer and familiarity with Microsoft Teams.
  • Flexibility to adjust to varying schedules and student needs.
  • Patience, empathy, and the ability to connect with young people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Willingness to travel across a wide service area that includes all of Harris County and neighboring counties.
Compensation
  • $20.00 per hour
Why Join This Mission?
As an Academic Coach, you won’t just help students complete assignments—you’ll inspire confidence, model resilience, and offer the encouragement they need to reach their goals. If you’re passionate about education and believe in the potential of every young person, this is your opportunity to make a lasting difference across a broad and diverse region.

Apply today to join a team committed to empowering youth across Harris County and beyond. We are aiming to welcome our new Academic Coach by August 25th!
