What are Volunteer AI Robotics Engineers?

Volunteer AI Robotics Engineers are individuals who offer their time and expertise to design, build, and program robotics systems that incorporate artificial intelligence, usually for non-profit organizations, educational initiatives, or community projects. They work on tasks such as developing algorithms for robot behavior, integrating sensors, and troubleshooting hardware and software issues. Unlike paid engineers, volunteers contribute without monetary compensation, motivated by learning, networking, or supporting a cause. These roles are ideal for students, professionals looking to gain experience, or those passionate about robotics and AI. Volunteers may work remotely or on-site, depending on the organization’s needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Volunteer AI Robotics Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Volunteer AI Robotics Engineer, you generally need strong foundations in robotics, artificial intelligence, programming (e.g., Python, C++), and a relevant degree or coursework in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with tools and platforms like ROS (Robot Operating System), TensorFlow, and hardware prototyping systems is typically expected. Creativity, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills that help you contribute meaningfully despite resource constraints. These skills and qualities enable you to design, implement, and improve AI-driven robotic solutions in collaborative, often fast-paced volunteer environments.

What are some common challenges Volunteer AI Robotics Engineers face when working with limited resources?

Volunteer AI Robotics Engineers often work in environments with constrained budgets, limited access to state-of-the-art hardware, and smaller teams. This can make prototyping, testing, and implementing complex AI algorithms more challenging. To overcome these hurdles, engineers frequently rely on open-source tools, collaborate across disciplines, and prioritize creative, cost-effective solutions. The experience builds strong problem-solving skills and adaptability, which are highly valued in both volunteer and professional settings.

Job description

Summary
GrayMatter Robotics is a well-capitalized Physical AI company headquartered in Los Angeles, building toward Factory SuperIntelligence (FSI), where intelligent machines learn, adapt, and improve the way factories run. Our robots take on the tedious, hazardous, and ergonomically demanding work that has kept manufacturing dependent on a shrinking skilled workforce. Delivered through a Robots-as-a-Service (RaaS) model, our systems improve with every part they touch, learning from one of the largest real-world manufacturing datasets ever assembled. We work at the intersection of AI, robotics, and manufacturing, and we hire people who want to solve hard physical problems at industrial scale.
The Robotics Engineer: Government Projects will enable customer success by leading the implementation, deployment, and support activities of smart robotic assistants for surface treatment applications.
Responsibilities
  • Work with customers to understand their manufacturing processes, requirements, and constraints, gathering critical data including measurements, CAD files, and documentation
  • Execute proof of concept projects that demonstrate the capabilities of GrayMatter technologies
  • Own robotic cell design end-to-end, collaborating with design and mechatronics teams to optimize for reachability, cycle time, and efficiency
  • Design and oversee fabrication of custom end-of-arm tooling and fixtures from concept through testing
  • Configure GMR-AI to generate optimized tool paths and trajectories for new applications
  • Rapidly prototype new inspection sensors, tools, and processes, working with sensor vendors to evaluate emerging technologies
  • Install, troubleshoot, and maintain control components including sensors, relays, and vacuum ejectors
  • Help develop new process recipes to accommodate different materials and geometries
  • Partner with software engineers to prototype new ideas, processes, and methods
  • Work with product and AI teams to continuously improve the customer experience
  • Create documentation, manuals, and educational content
  • Travel up to 30% to customer sites

Export Control Requirements
In order to comply with the export regulations of the United States Government, it is required that the applicant must fall under one of the following categories: (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful permanent resident (i.e. current green card holder), (iii) Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or (iv) Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or related field
  • Experience programming 6DOF robots for various surface finishing applications
  • Familiarity with motion control systems and robotics programming languages (e.g. Robot Operating System) or similar frameworks.
  • Basic programming knowledge in C++, Python, or other similar languages
  • Ability to solve technical problems effectively, efficiently, and independently
  • Demonstrated experience with 3D solid modeling, analysis, and development of 2D manufacturing drawings
  • Familiar with industrial facilities and equipment
  • Effective communication skills and strong interpersonal skills to work with internal and external stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with sensor integration and calibration for robotics applications, including vision systems, LiDAR, and inertial measurement units.
  • Industry experience within a manufacturing environment working on manufacturing process development, manufacturing engineering or similar
  • Experience in process engineering within a manufacturing environment
