Voip Systems Engineer information

What is a VoIP systems engineer?

VoIP Systems Engineers are IT professionals who design, implement, manage, and troubleshoot Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) systems. These systems enable voice communications and multimedia sessions over the internet, replacing traditional phone networks. VoIP Systems Engineers ensure reliable connectivity, optimize network performance for voice traffic, and maintain the security and quality of communication infrastructures. They often work with hardware, software, and network configurations to provide seamless voice services for organizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a VoIP systems engineer?

To thrive as a VoIP Systems Engineer, you need a solid understanding of networking fundamentals, VoIP protocols (such as SIP and RTP), and relevant telecommunications experience, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with PBX platforms, VoIP management systems, and certifications like Cisco CCNA Collaboration or CompTIA Network+ is typically required. Excellent troubleshooting, communication, and project management skills set top candidates apart in this role. These abilities are crucial for ensuring reliable, secure, and high-quality voice communications critical to business operations.

What are some common challenges VoIP systems engineers face when integrating new platforms with existing infrastructure?

VoIP Systems Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating new VoIP platforms with legacy systems, such as compatibility issues between different protocols or hardware. Ensuring seamless connectivity without disrupting ongoing communications requires careful planning and thorough testing. Additionally, managing network security and quality of service (QoS) to prevent call drops or latency can be complex in mixed environments. Collaborating closely with IT, network, and security teams is crucial to address these challenges effectively and ensure a smooth transition.

What is the difference between Voip Systems Engineer vs Voip Network Engineer?

AspectVoip Systems EngineerVoip Network Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires Cisco, Microsoft, or VoIP-specific certificationsSimilar certifications, often Cisco CCNA/CCNP, and network-focused
Work EnvironmentDesigning, implementing, and maintaining VoIP systems and solutionsManaging and optimizing VoIP network infrastructure and traffic
Industry UsageUsed in telecom, IT, and enterprise communication sectorsCommon in networking, telecom, and IT service providers

While both roles involve VoIP technology, the Voip Systems Engineer focuses on the overall system design and deployment, whereas the Voip Network Engineer concentrates on the network infrastructure and traffic management. Both roles require similar certifications and work environments, but their primary responsibilities differ within the VoIP ecosystem.

Are Voip Systems Engineers in demand?

VoIP Systems Engineers are in high demand due to the increasing reliance on VoIP technology for business communications. They are often required to have skills in network infrastructure, VoIP protocols, and certifications such as CCNA or CCNP, with job opportunities available across various industries and organizations expanding their communication systems.

How much do Voip Systems Engineers make in the US?

VoIP Systems Engineers in the US typically earn between $70,000 and $120,000 annually, depending on experience, certifications, and location. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced engineers with specialized skills can earn higher salaries, especially in tech hubs or with advanced certifications like CCNP or Cisco Certified Voice Professional.

How to become a Voip Systems Engineer?

To become a VoIP Systems Engineer, individuals typically need a bachelor's degree in computer science, telecommunications, or a related field, along with experience in network administration and VoIP technologies. Certifications such as Cisco CCNA Collaboration or CompTIA Network+ can enhance job prospects, and strong knowledge of networking protocols, SIP, and VoIP hardware is essential.

What does a Voip Systems Engineer do?

Job description

Leidos Civil IT division is focused on innovation and solving complex technical problems spanning infrastructure operations, cybersecurity analytics, and application modernizations. We rely on a team of skilled staff capable of operating across technical domains, embracing challenges, and being adaptable to new technologies and new ideas.

About the Role

This is not a traditional, siloed service desk role. We are actively seeking a candidate who is well-versed in troubleshooting and resolving issues within Microsoft Intune-managed environments, while also operating effectively across desktop support, endpoint management, security compliance, and network-related challenges. You will be expected to move fluidly across technical domains. This means owning problems end-to-end rather than handing them off-while balancing user experience, security requirements, and operational efficiency. This role is in support of a secure and enterprise scale environment with federally regulated compliance requirements. We are specifically looking for someone who can perform in the following areas:

  • Enterprise Desktop Administration
    • Build, image, configure, deploy, and maintain Windows workstations and peripherals using gold images and templates
    • Administer Active Directory sourced user and computer objects and provide continuous compliance oversight using Group Policy controls
    • Procure, track, and keep up to date software products and associated licensing
  • Design, implement, and maintain Microsoft Intune endpoint management solutions.
    • Procure and issue desktops with Intune Autopilot zero touch provisioning
    • Build automation using PowerShell and Microsoft Graph where appropriate
    • Troubleshoot and resolve Intune-related issues, including device configuration, policy application, compliance failures, and software deployment
    • Identify, prioritize, and remediate endpoint vulnerabilities using enterprise management and security tools
    • Navigate and resolve security and compliance-related challenges, including endpoint hardening, policy enforcement, and audit readiness
  • End User Support
    • Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical staff while maintaining a high level of customer service
    • Troubleshoot Windows operating systems, peripherals, printers, conferencing equipment, and endpoint hardware
    • Diagnose and address network connectivity issues (e.g., access restrictions, firewall rules, DNS, VPN, IP/Port/URL filtering)
  • Demonstrate the flexibility to contribute across endpoint engineering, user support, compliance, and operational initiatives as business priorities evolve
  • Continuously improve endpoint management processes through automation, standardization, and operational excellence

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in information systems or relevant field and 5+ years practical experience in the field
  • Ability to obtain public trust clearance and is a US Citizen
  • Ability to self-manage work tasks using M365 based tools
  • Demonstrated and proven ability to independently resolve issues, improve day-to-day operations with self-driven initiatives, and operate with a growth mindset
  • Hands-on experience administering or operating network access controls in the form of IP:Port or URL based filters
  • Practical experience managing enterprise desktops within a Microsoft Intune managed environment
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting and administering Windows operating systems in an enterprise environment - ideally including peripheral device management, asset management, and VOIP operations
  • Understanding and practical exposure with regulatory controls, baselines, and security policies within an Azure Entra and Intune based environment with enterprise desktops and endpoints (CIS benchmarks, STIG, etc)
  • Located near Indianapolis, IN and is both willing and capable to be on-site daily in support of the mission
