What is a vocational expert?

A Vocational Expert (VE) is a professional who evaluates an individual's ability to work, often in legal or disability cases. They analyze work histories, skills, and job availability to determine employability. VEs frequently testify in Social Security Disability hearings and other legal proceedings to provide expert opinions on work capability. Their assessments help decision-makers understand whether an individual can perform jobs despite their limitations.

What types of cases or settings do vocational experts typically work in?

Vocational Experts are most commonly involved in Social Security disability hearings, workers’ compensation cases, and personal injury litigation, where they assess a person's ability to work given their limitations. They can work in settings such as courtrooms, government agencies, private consulting firms, and rehabilitation centers. On a daily basis, Vocational Experts collaborate with attorneys, medical professionals, and clients to gather vocational and medical information, perform evaluations, and sometimes provide expert witness testimony. This diverse work environment offers exposure to a variety of case types and can contribute to strong professional growth over time.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a vocational expert, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Vocational Expert, you need a thorough understanding of labor market trends, vocational counseling, disability evaluation, and often a degree in rehabilitation counseling, psychology, or a related field. Experience with vocational assessment tools, job analysis software, and familiarity with legal or Social Security Administration procedures is often required. These competencies are crucial to providing accurate job suitability assessments and effective testimony in legal or rehabilitation settings.

To become a vocational expert, typically one needs a background in rehabilitation counseling, psychology, or a related field, along with experience in employment or disability assessment. Certification from professional organizations, such as the American Board of Vocational Experts, can enhance credibility, and strong skills in report writing and testimony are essential for the role.

How much do vocational experts make?

Vocational experts typically earn between $50,000 and $100,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and the complexity of cases they handle. They often work in legal or insurance settings, providing assessments related to employment and disability evaluations.

  • Monitor inventory levels and assist with ordering parts, supplies, and maintenance materials as needed.
  • Promote safe work practices and ensure compliance with company policies, environmental standards, and safety regulations.
  • Provide recommendations and guidance regarding preventative maintenance practices to support equipment reliability and performance.

What You Will Bring

  • Minimum of two years of mechanic experience with knowledge of preventative maintenance scheduling and fleet equipment service.
  • Strong understanding of vehicle diagnostic equipment, mechanical systems, and repair best practices.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to successfully complete required background, MVR, and pre-employment drug screening processes.
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving, communication, customer service, and safety-focused work habits; ASE certification and hydraulic equipment experience are preferred.

Work Environment & Preferences

  • Work Model: Field-based position supporting dispersed fleet and equipment locations
  • Preferred Schedule: Second shift; schedule may include nights, weekends, and other off-shift hours based on business needs
  • Travel Requirements: Frequent local travel to equipment and vehicle locations within assigned service areas
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to work in varying weather conditions, perform physically demanding tasks, lift up to 75 pounds, operate tools and equipment, work around noise, traffic, and hazardous environments, and wear required personal protective equipment.
