Their responsibilities include installing, configuring, monitoring, and troubleshooting ESXi hosts, as well as managing virtual machines and ensuring system security. They use remote management tools and interfaces, such as vSphere Client or SSH, to access and control the ESXi environment without being physically present at the server's location. This role is essential for businesses that rely on virtualized infrastructure and require continuous uptime and support.

Why are people moving away from VMware?

People in VMware ESXi remote roles may be moving away due to the increasing adoption of alternative virtualization platforms like Hyper-V and KVM, which can offer lower costs and open-source options. Additionally, organizations are shifting toward cloud-based solutions such as AWS and Azure, reducing reliance on traditional on-premises hypervisors, which impacts demand for VMware-specific skills.

What is VMware ESXi called now?

VMware ESXi is still called VMware ESXi; it is a hypervisor used for server virtualization. VMware has rebranded some products, but ESXi remains the core hypervisor technology for managing virtual machines in data centers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a VMware ESXi Remote Administrator, and why are they important?

A VMware ESXi Remote Administrator needs a solid understanding of virtualization concepts, VMware ESXi platform expertise, and often a degree in information technology or related field. Familiarity with vSphere, vCenter, automation tools like PowerCLI, and VMware certifications (such as VCP) are typically expected. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and clear remote communication abilities are important soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure efficient management of virtual environments, minimize downtime, and facilitate secure, reliable operations from remote locations.

Which job is best for WFH?

For remote work, roles such as VMware ESXi administrator, cloud engineer, or virtualization specialist are well-suited, often requiring skills in server management, virtualization tools, and remote collaboration. These jobs typically involve managing virtual environments, troubleshooting, and maintaining infrastructure from home with the right certifications and remote access tools.
