Vmi Manager information

What is a VMI manager?

VMI Managers, or Vendor Managed Inventory Managers, are professionals responsible for overseeing inventory levels and supply chain processes between a supplier and its customers. They manage inventory replenishment, ensure stock is available to meet demand, and optimize logistics to minimize costs and prevent stockouts or overstock situations. VMI Managers often use specialized software to monitor inventory in real time and work closely with both vendors and clients to coordinate order planning and delivery schedules. Their role is critical in improving supply chain efficiency and building strong supplier-customer relationships.

What does a VMI manager do?

A VMI (Vendor Managed Inventory) Manager works closely with both suppliers and internal departments such as procurement, sales, and logistics to maintain the right inventory levels. They facilitate regular communication with suppliers to share demand forecasts, sales data, and inventory status, ensuring that stock is replenished proactively. Internally, VMI Managers coordinate with sales and operations to understand market trends and customer requirements, making adjustments as needed. This collaborative approach helps prevent stockouts or overstock situations, supporting smooth supply chain operations.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a VMI manager?

To thrive as a VMI Manager, you need strong analytical skills, supply chain knowledge, and experience with inventory management, typically supported by a relevant bachelor's degree in business, logistics, or supply chain management. Familiarity with ERP systems, inventory management software, and data analysis tools like Excel or SAP is crucial. Exceptional communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills help build productive relationships with vendors and internal teams. These competencies are vital to ensure optimal inventory levels, reduce costs, and maintain efficient supply chain operations.

As we celebrate our 110th anniversary, we're proud of our history and focused on continuing that tradition through outstanding customer service, strong partnerships, and dependable people.
We're looking for a motivated Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) Representative to help our customers stay productive while building lasting relationships.
Job Summary
As a Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) Representative, you'll become a trusted partner to your assigned customers by helping them manage inventory, maintain stocked vending solutions, and ensure they have the products they need when they need them.
This role combines customer service, inventory management, route operations, and account development. You'll spend much of your day visiting customer locations, monitoring inventory levels, replenishing products, identifying opportunities to improve service, and working closely with our sales team to help customers succeed.
If you enjoy working independently, building relationships, solving problems, and delivering exceptional service, this is an excellent opportunity.
What You'll Do
  • Maintain a regular service route and visit assigned customer locations on schedule.
  • Monitor and replenish customer inventory to maintain appropriate stock levels.
  • Manage industrial vending machines and ensure products are stocked accurately and efficiently.
  • Utilize Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) systems to track inventory, replenish products, and monitor usage trends.
  • Build strong relationships by serving as the primary contact for customers regarding VMI services.
  • Collaborate with customers to understand their inventory needs and recommend solutions that improve efficiency.
  • Work closely with the Sales Team to identify opportunities for additional products and expanded services.
  • Support customer retention by delivering reliable, responsive, and professional service.
  • Participate in customer business reviews and help identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Maintain company equipment and vehicles in a clean, safe, and professional condition.
  • Assist teammates with account coverage and cross-training as needed.
  • Consistently meet service expectations and contribute to branch and sales goals.
What We're Looking For
  • Excellent customer service and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities.
  • Ability to work independently while effectively managing a daily route.
  • Comfortable using computers, mobile technology, and inventory management systems.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to prioritize multiple customer needs.
  • Valid driver's license and a safe driving record.
Helpful, But Not Required
  • Experience in route sales, Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI), merchandising, inventory management, or field service.
  • Experience working directly with customers in industrial distribution, manufacturing, construction supply, automotive, or similar industries.
  • Familiarity with inventory management software and reporting tools.
  • Experience identifying opportunities to grow existing customer accounts.

Don't have VMI experience? We encourage you to apply if you have strong customer service skills, enjoy working independently, and are excited to build lasting relationships with customers.
Physical Requirements
This position combines driving, customer interaction, inventory management, and product handling.
Employees should be able to:
  • Frequently stand, walk, bend, reach, and lift throughout the workday.
  • Lift and carry products and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Load and unload inventory from a company vehicle.
  • Work safely in warehouse, office, manufacturing, and industrial customer environments.
  • Safely operate a company vehicle while traveling between customer locations.
Join Industrial Supply
At Industrial Supply, our VMI Representatives play an important role in helping customers stay productive and keeping their operations running smoothly.
If you enjoy building relationships, solving problems, working independently, and delivering outstanding customer service, we'd love to have you join our team.
Come help us build on 110 years of service and success. Apply today.
