What does a visual production manager do?

A Visual Production Manager oversees the planning, coordination, and execution of visual content projects such as photoshoots, video productions, and multimedia presentations. They manage teams of creatives, handle budgets and schedules, and ensure that the final output meets both creative and technical standards. Their responsibilities also include coordinating with clients, securing locations, and troubleshooting issues that arise during production. Visual Production Managers play a crucial role in delivering high-quality visual content on time and within budget.

What are some typical challenges faced by a visual production manager, and how are they addressed within a creative team?

Visual Production Managers often navigate tight deadlines, shifting project scopes, and coordination among diverse creative professionals, such as designers, videographers, and editors. Effective communication and strong organizational skills are essential to keep projects on track and ensure high-quality deliverables. Building robust production schedules, anticipating resource needs, and fostering a collaborative team environment help address these challenges. Regular check-ins and clear feedback loops can also minimize miscommunication and streamline the production workflow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a visual production manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Visual Production Manager, you need expertise in project management, visual design principles, and production workflows, often supported by a degree in film, visual arts, or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, project management software like Asana or Trello, and experience with budgeting and scheduling systems is essential. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help coordinate teams and ensure creative vision is executed efficiently. These abilities are crucial for delivering high-quality visual content on time and within budget while fostering a collaborative and creative production environment.

  • Use storytelling, prototypes, and direction-setting to help sell ideas, build excitement, and secure buy-in during client conversations and pursuits
  • Partner closely with product managers, strategy leads, and engineering to translate visual decisions into usable, feasible, on-brand solutions
  • Bring AI and emerging design tools into discovery, ideation, and production work with sound judgment on quality, accuracy, and accessibility, and share what’s working with the broader team
  • Coach designers on craft, presentation, and storytelling through critique and day-to-day collaboration
Preferred qualifications Strong portfolio and experience including:
  • Art direction and creative concepting
  • Creating and implementing design systems
  • Compelling visual design across any screen size or form factor

  • Experience translating visual and craft decisions into a clear business rationale that clients and stakeholders can act on
  • Technical feasibility understanding and ability to communicate successfully with engineering
  • Experience with inclusive and accessible design practices
  • Independently drive the design review cycle and align on design requirements/decisions with stakeholders
  • Comfort operating across the full arc of a project, from framing the problem through shipping the polished execution
  • Ability to multi-task and stay deadline-oriented with the ability to prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks within allotted timeframes
  • Growing fluency with AI-assisted design and prototyping tools, with sound judgment evaluating AI-generated output and curiosity to adopt them responsibly into everyday workflows
  • Experience creating detailed, structured design specifications that hand off cleanly to engineering, especially valuable if you’ve worked with distributed or offshore development teams
  • 10+ years of work experience as a visual designer, product designer, or equivalent role
  • 10+ years familiarity with common design and collaboration tools such as Figma, Sketch, Miro, etc.
  • Bachelor’s and/or graduate degree in a related field, or equivalent professional experience
  • 10+ years with Portfolio demonstrating examples of work product and process, and evidence of both strategic thinking and hands-on execution
  • 10+ years demonstrated experience leading visual direction on individual client engagements
Desired Qualities
  • T-shaped: You move fluidly across strategy, execution, and storytelling, going deep on craft while staying connected to why it matters
  • Human-centered: You prioritize human-centered design philosophy and best practices in all your design activities
  • A practical creative: You enjoy solving complex problems creatively but are practical in your solutions, realizing the many constraints that may impede the "ideal"
  • Flexible work style: You work equally well in a collaborative, team-based environment as you do independently
  • Collaborator: You work harmoniously with others, exemplify unity in purpose, and avoid competitive or combative attitudes
  • Independent: You have all the skills necessary to solve any problem, accomplish any activity, and run any type of project without oversight
