Job description

This position will be based at the Metrolink site in Colton.

Join us as Composite Mechanic, and you'll be looking at a career-defining role based Colton (CA). Note this position is Unionized and requires joining the Union organization.

In your role as a Composite Mechanic, you will:

Inspect, repair, and maintain diesel-powered vehicle and perform a variety of tasks, including basic maintenance, engine overhauls, and rebuilding. You may also work on a vehicle's electrical system, replace parts like the power assembly, cooling system mechanism, or braking system, and retrofit engines with emission control systems.

Primary Activities and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).  
  • Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot and repair malfunctions in engines, air brake equipment, running gear or locomotive components.  
  • Perform equipment work order management using asset management database.   
  • Operate locomotive, passenger coaches and prime mover as part of team to move rail equipment.  
  • Additional duties as assigned in accordance with union agreement and incidental work rule provisions. 

 Minimum Qualifications 

  • High School diploma/GED  
  • Valid Driver's License  
  • 2 years of combined mechanical and/or electrical work experience in a relevant field (Formal education may be substituted for experience)
  • Experience reading and interpreting blueprints  
  • Experience in interpreting circuit schematics 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Must have strong analytical skills
  • Ability to read and understand safety instructions, manuals, and directives.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and team members.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and complete tasks accurately.
  • Ability to solve basic problems and escalate issues to supervisors as necessary.

Basic Competencies 

  • Verbal comprehension (Understand oral and written communications--both general and technical)  
  • Communication skills (provide clear instructions/directions)  
  • Reasoning skills (problem solving and troubleshooting skills)  
  • Mechanical aptitude and basic understanding of electrical theory 
  • Must be able to obtain Qualified Maintenance Person (QMP) designation and qualification 
  • Driving record needs to be absent any moving convictions for alcohol or substance abuse within the previous 36 months 
  • Must have basic proficiency with Windows software and Microsoft Office Suite applications (i.e., Outlook) 

Physical Requirements 

  • Heavy work, lifting up to 70 pounds occasionally and up to 100 pounds on a rare basis  
  • Stoop/bend/kneel/crouch/balance/climb on a regular basis 
  • Push/pull/grip/carry on a regular basis 
  • Walking long distances over uneven terrain  
  • Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity  
  • Exposure to equipment that intensifies the heat factor on an occasional basis 

 

Employment Conditions 

  • Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries  
  • Wear protective equipment such as hard hat, hearing protection, safety-toe boots and safety glasses  
  • Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shift work  
  • Complete annual training and pass safety rules examination  
  • Subject to random testing for drugs and/or alcohol per certifications 
  • Must pass all required assessments  Required to pass a post-offer medical examination, including drug and alcohol testing. 
  • This position will be governed by a collective bargaining agreement, membership is required  
  • Active employees must complete one year in current position or craft before applying for positions 

Salary Rate:

$28.68/hour
