The Seattle Times, a family-owned news organization and one of the nationโs premier regional news sources,ย is seeking a leader to join our award-winning businessย team.ย As theย Deputy Business Editor, you will help guide an eight-person team that coversย aerospace, the tech sector, realย estate, affordabilityย challengesย and theย health of theย localย economy. We are looking for someone who inspires,ย coachesย and empowers journalists.ย
The Deputy Business Editor will oversee reporters and collaborate with the Business Editor on coverage of regional economicย and employmentย trendsย as well asย major Northwest players such as Boeing, Amazon, Microsoft,ย Costcoย andย Starbucks. The successful candidate will know how to balance breaking news, deep-diveย enterpriseย and watchdog stories, and will tailor high-concept and complex stories to a general readership, showing how business news affects workers, small-business owners, consumers, homebuyers/rentersย and others who call the Pacific Northwest home.ย
Responsibilitiesย
- Leads reporters to produce daily news and longer-term enterprise stories.
- Worksย withย newsroom departments to lead ambitious projects that cut broadly acrossย disciplines and topical areas. Collaborates withย visualย journalistsย andย theย digitalย teamย to create rich experiences for readers.ย
- Ralliesย staff toย respond quickly and accurately to breaking news,ย establishingย The Seattle Times as the leading source of information in a competitive marketplace.ย
- Usesย analytics to inform coverage that reachesย new readers, winsย subscribersย and builds loyalty.ย
- Embracesย diversity in the workplace and in our coverage, thinking inclusively about everything from story framing and sourcing to word choice and presentation.ย

- Experience:ย Strong preference for candidates with experience as a supervising editor.
- Excellent team-leadership skills, with proven successย developingย andย retainingย top talent. Passion for coaching and mentoring journalists.โฏย
- Demonstrated record of successfully reporting and editing business coverage, including complex enterprise story packages as well as breaking news.ย
- Strong news judgment, with impeccable standards of accuracy,ย honestyย and fairness.โฏย
- Cultural competence andย a provenย track recordย of practicingย inclusive journalism.โฏย
- Sophisticated communicationย skills;ย ability to negotiate, collaborate and engageย in sometimesย challenging conversations with staff,ย leadershipย and readers.โฏย
- Demonstrated skill at coaching reporters to find, shape and report stories,ย usingย tools such as datasets, earningsย reportsย and public records requests. Familiarity with laws governing bankruptcy, employment,ย debtย and other business matters.ย
Compensation:ย The full salary range for this position is $89,900 to $127,000. For this opening, we expect to pay between $95,000 to $115,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
