What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Visual Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Visual Designer, you need a strong foundation in design principles, typography, color theory, and proficiency with a degree in graphic or visual design. Mastery of tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and familiarity with digital platforms or prototyping tools like Figma is essential. Creativity, attention to detail, and excellent communication skills set outstanding visual designers apart. These skills ensure the creation of compelling visuals that effectively communicate ideas, align with brand goals, and engage target audiences.

How do visual designers typically collaborate with other teams during a project?

Visual designers frequently work alongside UX designers, developers, and product managers to ensure that the visual aspects of a product align with the overall user experience and technical requirements. Collaboration often involves participating in design reviews, providing assets, and iterating on feedback from different stakeholders. Clear communication and openness to feedback are crucial, as visual designers must balance creative vision with practical constraints and user needs. This collaborative environment helps ensure cohesive, visually appealing, and user-friendly final products.

What is the difference between Visual Design vs Graphic Design?

AspectVisual DesignGraphic Design
FocusCreating visual concepts, layouts, and user interfaces for digital productsDesigning visual content for print and digital media, including logos, posters, and branding materials
SkillsUI/UX principles, typography, color theory, digital toolsTypography, layout, branding, print production
Work EnvironmentPrimarily digital, web, app interfacesPrint studios, advertising agencies, digital media

While both roles involve visual creativity, Visual Design primarily focuses on digital interfaces and user experience, whereas Graphic Design emphasizes visual content for print and branding. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or project focus.

Is AI replacing graphic designers?

AI tools are increasingly used in visual design to automate repetitive tasks and generate ideas, but they do not fully replace graphic designers. Designers still rely on creativity, critical thinking, and understanding client needs, making AI a complement rather than a substitute in the profession.

What is visual design?

Visual design is a field focused on the aesthetics and graphical elements of a product, website, or digital interface. It combines principles of graphic design, color theory, typography, and layout to create visually appealing and effective communications. Visual designers work to ensure that interfaces are both attractive and functional, enhancing user experience by guiding attention and conveying brand identity. Their work often overlaps with UI design, but visual design prioritizes the look and feel rather than the structure or usability alone.

What degree do you need to be a Visual Designer?

A bachelor's degree in graphic design, visual communication, or a related field is typically required for a visual designer role. Strong skills in design software like Adobe Creative Suite and a compelling portfolio are also essential. Some positions may accept equivalent experience or certifications in lieu of a degree.

What does a Visual Designer do?

A Visual Designer creates visual concepts, layouts, and graphics for digital or print media to communicate ideas and enhance user experience. They use tools like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, or Sketch and often collaborate with developers and content creators to ensure designs align with brand standards and project goals.

Job Purpose
We're looking for a Visual Design Lead to own the VulcanForms brand and ensure it shows up with clarity, quality, and consistency across all touchpoints. This role will define and evolve our visual system, drive corporate, brand, and commercial initiatives, and shape how customers, partners, investors, and future employees understand our company.
This is a hands-on, mid-level creative role for a designer who can take complex technical concepts and turn them into clear, visually compelling work.
You will work closely with our commercial, engineering, finance, and business development teams and executive leadership to ensure VulcanForms presents a consistent, high-quality visual identity across web, presentations, technical documents, environmental design, and large-scale campaigns.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the visual direction, design language, and execution for the VulcanForms brand across digital (including socials) and physical platforms.
  • Build and maintain guidelines for typography, color, layout systems, iconography, motion, photography, and overall visual identity.
  • Produce high-quality design work across social media, website pages, technical documents, workflow illustrations, strategic presentations, trade shows, investor communications, and customer programs.
  • Partner closely with our commercial, engineering, finance, and business development teams and executive leadership to translate complex ideas and processes into clear, accurate content.
  • Raise the creative bar internally by improving the visual quality of presentations and customer-facing materials.
  • Ensure visual consistency and brand alignment across all materials.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design, visual communication, digital product design, or equivalent experience.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating excellent visual design skills, including layout, typography, hierarchy, color, and iconography.
  • 5 or more years of professional experience designing for complex or technical industries.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and execute multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines in a fast-moving environment.
  • Experience developing or extending visual design systems and brand guidelines.
  • Expertise with Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to convert technical concepts into clear, accurate visuals without oversimplifying.
  • Confidence collaborating with engineers, and cross-functional teams.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills with a collaborative mindset.
  • Experience creating technical diagrams, process visuals, and data-driven graphics.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in advanced manufacturing or 3D printing.
  • Experience managing external agencies, including briefing, reviewing, and approving work.
  • Ability to write clear, compelling copy to support design work.

VulcanForms offers a competitive salary and equity package. Actual compensation is based on factors such as the candidate's skills, qualifications, and experience. In addition, VulcanForms provides comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance; generous paid time off; and a 401(k) plan with company match.
The annual base salary range for this position is $103,000 to $142,000.
