Senior Designer (L7) - Branded UI Visual Design
Work Arrangement
This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the office in Warren, MI three times per week or other frequency dictated by the business.
The Role
The GM Human Interface Design - Vehicle Studio is looking for a Senior Designer who is passionate about creating thoughtful in-vehicle user experiences in close collaboration with design, software, and engineering teams. In this role, you will help shape digital interfaces used by millions of customers across Digital Instrument Clusters, Touchscreens, and Head-Up Displays (HUD). You will work with designers, researchers, engineers, and cross-functional partners to create clear, visually compelling, and customer-centered experiences. The ideal candidate brings strong user interface design and UX skills, exceptional attention to detail, and the ability to independently drive high-quality work while influencing design outcomes across teams.
What You'll Do
  • Own the design development and delivery of in-vehicle digital experiences across assigned product areas.
  • Create exceptional visual design concepts, mood boards, UI assets, prototypes, and production-ready graphics for complex digital interfaces.
  • Translate user needs, brand direction, business goals, and technical constraints into elegant, intuitive, and visually refined design solutions.
  • Lead design reviews, set visual quality standards, communicate design rationale clearly, and present recommendations to cross-functional stakeholders and partners.
  • Drive alignment across design, engineering, and related teams to deliver cohesive, visually consistent, and premium-quality experiences across multiple surfaces and screen sizes.
  • Use research, usability findings, data, and feedback to strengthen visual clarity, UI usability, and overall experience quality and strengthen customer outcomes.
  • Serve as a visual craft leader to other designers by sharing expertise, providing feedback, and mentoring more junior team members.
  • Deliver precise, well-documented, and development-ready design files, specifications, and documentation to support efficient collaboration and development handoff.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor's degree in Visual Design, Graphic Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, or a related discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience designing digital user interfaces for automotive, embedded, mobile, or other complex product experiences.
  • Strong portfolio which shows evidence of high-quality visual craft, clear design judgment, polished end-to-end execution, and thoughtful UX problem solving.
  • Strong UI visualization, visual communication, digital design, and UX design skills, with the ability to create intuitive and customer-centered interfaces.
  • Experience leading design work from concept through production for complex digital products or systems.
  • Experience creating sketches, mockups, prototypes, presentations, and other design communication materials.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard design tools such as Sketch, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise strong judgment, and solve ambiguous or non-standard design challenges.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills when working with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience presenting design rationale and influencing decisions with stakeholders and project partners.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
  • 7+ years of experience designing automotive or other complex digital interfaces across multiple surfaces and screen sizes.
  • Experience contributing to brand-forward digital experiences, including visual language, brand systems, or interface design systems.
  • Strong portfolio which shows evidence of advanced visual craft, strong taste level, polished interaction design, and systems thinking.
  • Experience balancing visual design excellence with solid UX thinking to create clear, intuitive customer experiences.
  • Experience with prototyping, motion design, animation, or interaction storytelling.
  • Experience applying usability findings, heuristic evaluation, or customer insights to refine designs.
  • Familiarity with the product development lifecycle for digital products, embedded systems, or automotive experiences.
  • Experience mentoring or guiding more junior designers and helping raise the design bar across a team.
