What is a Visual Basic programmer?

Visual Basic Programmers are software developers who specialize in using the Visual Basic programming language to create, modify, and maintain software applications. They often work with Microsoft technologies such as the .NET framework to build desktop, web, or business applications. Their responsibilities include writing code, debugging, testing, and collaborating with other developers to meet project requirements. Visual Basic Programmers are commonly employed in industries that rely on legacy systems or require rapid application development.

What does a Visual Basic programmer do?

A Visual Basic (VB) programmer maintains older codebases that heavily used the Visual Basic programming language. As a Visual Basic programmer, your job duties include integrating old code with new applications that use newer programming languages, troubleshooting issues that arise, updating and patching snippets of code, and ensuring the continued functionality of computer software applications that rely on a codebase written primarily in Visual Basic. As fewer companies use Visual Basic in software development, your responsibilities include learning and utilizing newer programming languages to supplement your skills and help your employer adapt to new technological standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Visual Basic programmer, and why are they important?

A Visual Basic Programmer should have a solid grasp of Visual Basic (VB) programming, software development principles, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with Microsoft Visual Studio, SQL databases, and version control systems like Git is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help programmers collaborate and deliver reliable solutions. These skills are vital to create robust applications, maintain legacy systems, and support business processes efficiently.

What are some common challenges Visual Basic programmers face when maintaining legacy applications?

Visual Basic Programmers often encounter challenges when working with legacy applications, such as outdated codebases, limited documentation, and compatibility issues with modern systems. Maintaining and updating these applications may require reverse-engineering old logic, refactoring inefficient code, and ensuring integration with newer technologies. Effective communication with stakeholders and collaborating with other developers are key to overcoming these challenges and delivering reliable updates.

What is the difference between Visual Basic Programmer vs Visual Basic Developer?

AspectVisual Basic ProgrammerVisual Basic Developer
CredentialsTypically requires a diploma or certification in programming or computer scienceOften has similar credentials, sometimes with additional experience or certifications in software development
Work EnvironmentWorks mainly on coding, debugging, and maintaining Visual Basic applicationsInvolved in designing, developing, and implementing Visual Basic solutions, often overseeing projects
Industry UsageCommon in small to medium businesses, legacy systems, and internal toolsUsed in enterprise environments, software development firms, and custom application projects

While both roles involve working with Visual Basic, a Visual Basic Programmer primarily focuses on coding and troubleshooting, whereas a Visual Basic Developer typically handles the full development lifecycle, including design and implementation.

Job description

Prime Video is seeking a Sr. UX Visual Designer to join our centralized visual, motion, and artwork design studio within Prime Video Experience Design (PVXD). In this role, you will be an experienced visual designer responsible for contributing to and scaling the visual experience across Prime Video's product landscape - spanning living room, mobile, web, and tablet surfaces across global markets.
As a senior individual contributor, you will execute on and help evolve the visual design vision for Prime Video's product experience, contribute to scalable design systems, and tackle complex design challenges across Prime Video's product surfaces. This is not a traditional UI design role - you will operate at the intersection of brand expression, systems thinking, and experience prototyping, partnering closely with motion designers, interaction designers, design technologists, researchers, product managers, and engineering leaders to deliver high-quality experiences.
Key job responsibilities
Visual Design Craft & Execution: Contribute to and refine the visual design language for Prime Video's product experience - including layout systems, color, typography, iconography, illustration, and imagery treatment. Execute on the strategic direction for how visual design expresses the Prime Video brand across platforms and surfaces, while informing its evolution through hands-on craft work.
Design System Contribution: Contribute to and extend the visual foundations of Prime Video's design system (Fable) - working with tokens, component visual standards, patterns, and guidelines that scale across teams and platforms. Help drive adoption of system standards and propose improvements based on product needs.
Prototyping & Experience Visualization: Create high-fidelity prototypes that bring design concepts to life - communicating vision, validating ideas with stakeholders, and bridging the gap between static comps and production experiences. Use prototyping as a tool for storytelling, alignment, and decision-making.
Complex Problem Solving: Take on complex, multi-faceted design challenges that require strong judgment - navigating tradeoffs, proposing solutions, and delivering polished visual work that establishes or extends patterns for the product.
Motion Design Partnership: Collaborate closely with motion designers to ensure visual and motion design work as a unified system. Provide visual direction that informs motion behavior, review motion work for brand and visual coherence, and partner on defining how static and dynamic elements integrate within the design system.
Engineering Collaboration & Hand-off: Partner with engineering teams to ensure technical feasibility, performance, and fidelity of visual implementations at platform scale. Create detailed design specifications and participate in design QA and Walk the Store sessions to verify production fidelity.
Design System Adoption: Drive design system adoption within your product area. Participate in system-level design reviews and contribute to ensuring the system evolves to meet the needs of designers across the organization.
Mentorship & Craft Elevation: Actively mentor peers and contribute to raising the visual design craft bar across the studio. Participate in and contribute to design critiques, and model strong craft in systematic visual thinking, prototyping, and brand expression.
Cross-Team Influence: Contribute visual design perspectives that inform product direction and design review cycles. Use prototypes and visual artifacts to drive alignment with partner teams.
Accessibility & Inclusive Design: Advocate for accessible, inclusive visual design that meets global standards and serves diverse audiences - ensuring visual systems account for contrast, readability, and adaptability across contexts.
