Visiting Professor Creative Writing information

What is a visiting professor in creative writing?

Visiting Professors in Creative Writing are experienced writers or scholars who temporarily join a university or college to teach courses, lead workshops, and mentor students in creative writing. Their appointments typically last from one semester to a few years, and they may be brought in to offer fresh perspectives, cover for faculty on leave, or enhance the institution's literary offerings. Visiting Professors often contribute to the academic community by participating in readings, events, and collaborative projects, while also continuing their own writing and research.

How does a visiting professor in creative writing typically collaborate with full-time faculty and students during their appointment?

As a Visiting Professor in Creative Writing, you’ll actively collaborate with full-time faculty by co-developing course syllabi, participating in departmental meetings, and sometimes co-hosting workshops or literary events. You’ll also mentor students through one-on-one feedback sessions, group workshops, and possibly advising on thesis projects. While your position is temporary, you’re encouraged to contribute your unique expertise and creative perspective, fostering a dynamic learning environment and expanding the department’s offerings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a visiting professor in creative writing, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Visiting Professor of Creative Writing, you typically need an advanced degree (such as an MFA or PhD), a strong portfolio of published work, and prior teaching experience. Familiarity with learning management systems (e.g., Canvas, Blackboard) and workshop-based pedagogical methods is important. Outstanding communication, mentorship, and adaptability are essential soft skills that foster student growth and engagement. These qualifications and skills are crucial for delivering effective instruction, inspiring students, and contributing to the academic community.
