Virtual Vet Tech information

What is a virtual vet tech?

Virtual vet techs are veterinary technicians who provide support and guidance to pet owners through online platforms, phone calls, or video consultations. They assist with answering questions about pet health, administering medications, managing chronic conditions, and giving general care advice. While they cannot diagnose or prescribe medications, they play a key role in triaging concerns and helping pet owners decide when to seek in-person veterinary care. Virtual vet techs help bridge the gap between pet owners and veterinarians, making expert advice more accessible.

How does a virtual vet tech typically collaborate with veterinarians and clients in a remote setting?

As a Virtual Vet Tech, you’ll work closely with veterinarians by assisting in telehealth appointments, collecting patient histories, and providing client education remotely. Communication is mainly conducted through video calls, emails, and specialized telemedicine platforms. Your role also involves triaging cases, answering questions from pet owners, and ensuring accurate record-keeping. Strong teamwork and clear, compassionate communication are essential, as you act as a bridge between veterinarians and clients to deliver quality care in a virtual environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual vet tech, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Vet Tech, you need a solid background in veterinary nursing or technology, often supported by a veterinary technician certification (such as RVT, LVT, or CVT) and experience in animal care. Familiarity with telemedicine platforms, practice management software, and secure communication systems is typically required. Outstanding communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills help virtual vet techs effectively support clients and collaborate with veterinarians remotely. These skills ensure accurate care guidance, client satisfaction, and the smooth delivery of telehealth services in veterinary medicine.

Can you work remotely as a new virtual vet tech?

Yes, many virtual vet tech positions are available for remote work, especially those involving client communication, appointment scheduling, and telehealth support. Employers often require familiarity with veterinary software and good communication skills, and some roles may require certification or experience in veterinary technology. Remote work allows flexibility but may involve specific technical requirements and adherence to privacy regulations.

Is a virtual vet tech degree worth it?

A virtual vet tech degree can be valuable for those seeking to work remotely in veterinary technology, as it provides the necessary knowledge of animal care, medical procedures, and client communication. However, employers often require certification or licensing, which may involve passing exams and gaining hands-on experience, so the degree's value depends on accreditation and industry standards.

What is a good second job for a virtual vet tech?

A virtual vet tech can consider a second job such as pet sitting, dog walking, or freelance veterinary writing, which often offer flexible hours and can complement their veterinary knowledge. Skills in communication, organization, and familiarity with pet care are beneficial for these roles.

Job description

Overview
Veterinary Assistant | Oregon, Wisconsin
You spend the morning learning to read a nervous Lab's body language before her nail trim, help prep a hunting dog for his pre-season checkup with one of our Hunt.Vet certified veterinarians, and by afternoon you're checking a rabbit's teeth for the first time; every day here teaches you something new. That's what training to become a Veterinary Assistant at Country View Veterinary Service looks like.
About the Practice
We've served Oregon, Wisconsin and the greater Madison community since 1999, and we grow our own. We're AAHA accredited, meeting a robust set of criteria that only about 15% of practices nationally are committed to, and we keep pace with the advancement of medicine by maintaining that accreditation. We're a certified Cat Friendly Practice, for real: we use feline-specific handling and housing so our whiskered patients (and the people who love them) have a calmer visit. Our handling philosophy is Fear Free-minded and low-stress throughout; we read body language and meet patients where they are, rather than forcing the moment. Not one, but two of our own DVMs are Hunt.Vet certified, always going the extra mile for working dogs in the Dane County hunting community, dogs with jobs hold a special place in our hearts. Whether you're pre-vet, pre-tech, or just exploring the field, our team of six DVMs loves to teach, and we'll help you build toward.
What You'll Help Make Possible
  • Calm, low-stress visits for nervous patients, thanks to careful handling and clear communication
  • Accurate records and diagnostics that help our veterinary team make fast, confident decisions
  • Smooth appointment turnover that keeps our whole hospital's day on track
  • Specialized, informed care for the working dogs in our local hunting community

What We're Looking For
Required:
  • No prior clinical experience required, this is a structured, entry-level training-track role. You'll work through a structured skills checklist with hands-on sign-off from our Credentialed Veterinary Technicians and DVMs, no prior clinical experience required, just a willingness to learn and a commitment to high-quality patient care.
  • Comfortable safely lifting and transporting patients (40 lbs and under unassisted, 41 lbs and over with a teammate)
  • Basic computer and software skills

Preferred:
  • Comfort learning our IDEXX in-house diagnostic suite: SNAP 4Dx Plus, VetLab Station, SNAP Pro, Catalyst One, ProCyte Dx, SediVue Dx, InVue Dx, and the VetLab UA Analyzer
  • Basic computer and software skills (Word, Outlook, and practice-management software; we use Avimark)
  • Experience with animal restraint or low-stress handling techniques
  • A calm, steady presence and strong communication skills

Schedule
  • Part-time, Day shift
  • 10-hour shifts
  • Rotating weekends
  • No holiday shifts required

Compensation
Compensation for this role starts $15.00/hour. Final compensation based on experience and role alignment.
Benefits
  • Competitive pay based on experience
  • Free virtual mental health services for your household (ages 13+)
  • Up to a 5% match on your 401(k)
  • A generous CE allowance to help fuel your growth
  • Uniform allowance to keep you comfortable and clinic-ready
  • Discounted care for your personal pets
  • Paid Time Off for those working 25+ hours per week
  • A robust Employee Assistance Program covering mental health support, financial tools, and everything in between
  • Access to Encore Vet Group's exclusive library of training, education, and development resources

If you're looking for a place that will genuinely grow you from the ground up, alongside a team that loves to teach and a hospital that backs it up with real credentials, we'd love to hear from you. Apply today.
