Job description
SUMMARY:
The Criminal Justice Internship provides students pursuing a Criminal Justice degree with the opportunity to work with local Reentry Coalitions, the Division of Probation & Parole, and their local Sheriff’s Office; assist formerly incarcerated individuals with job seeking, placement, and retention; learn about assets and barriers to the justice-involved; and participate in services that acclimate the justice-impacted back into the community. The goal of this position is to educate a student who will eventually be working in the criminal justice system about the assets, barriers, and gaps that justice-impacted individuals face and projects available to navigate those.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and/or Experience: Participants must be a full-time/part-time student pursuing a degree in the Criminal Justice field.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must possess a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation, or otherwise be able to travel between agency locations as required for the position.
Screenings: Employment is contingent upon a successful completion of a background check and satisfactory driving record verification.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Comfortable interacting with justice-involved individuals (under supervision with the Division of Probation & Parole; currently incarcerated)
- Strong verbal skills; ability to communicate clearly with participants, staff, and partner agencies
- Comfortable making telephone calls to clients and community partners
- Ability to document services and interactions accurately and in a timely manner
- Basic computer literacy (typing, email, data entry, virtual meetings, Microsoft Office)
- Comfortable learning new digital tools for tracking services and outcomes
- Able to and comfortable with entering correctional centers
- Comfortable with public speaking
