What is virtual teaching?

Virtual teaching is the practice of delivering educational instruction to students through online platforms rather than in a traditional classroom setting. Teachers use video conferencing, learning management systems, and digital resources to facilitate lessons, assignments, and assessments. This approach enables students to learn remotely from anywhere with an internet connection, providing flexibility and access to a wider range of educational opportunities. Virtual teaching can be used for all grade levels and subjects, and is increasingly popular for both full-time online schools and supplemental learning.

What are some common challenges virtual teachers face when engaging students online, and how can these be addressed?

Virtual teachers often encounter challenges such as limited student participation, distractions at home, and difficulty gauging student understanding without face-to-face cues. To address these, teachers can incorporate interactive activities like polls and breakout rooms, set clear expectations for participation, and use formative assessment tools to monitor progress. Establishing regular check-ins and fostering a supportive online community can also help keep students engaged and motivated.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual teacher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Teacher, you need strong subject matter expertise, a teaching credential, and experience in curriculum design and online instruction. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS) such as Canvas or Google Classroom, video conferencing tools like Zoom, and digital assessment platforms is typically required. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and digital engagement skills help foster student participation and motivation in a remote environment. These competencies ensure effective virtual learning, student achievement, and a positive online classroom experience.

Job description

At LearnWell, we are committed to changing the lives of the 10 million students in the U.S. who are dealing with behavioral health issues. For more than 26 years, we have provided on-site educational services in hospitals, helping these school-age patients continue their education during treatment and reintegrate successfully into the classroom. With a network of over 200 educators, we strive to make a positive impact for generations to come.
Currently, we are seeking passionate and creative teachers to assist with our growing need for virtual tutoring. This unique position will involve working remotely, providing academic support to child and adolescent school-age patients as they receive treatment in behavioral health facilities. Teachers must be state-certified and can assist with K-12 core subjects, however many of our students need assistance in high school math and science.
In this role, teachers provide virtual tutoring support to students on a 1:1 and small group setting with the main responsibility is to act as an aide for the student, guiding them through educational material and ensuring their academic success.
Availability and Schedule :
Position requires consistent availability Monday-Friday between 8:00 AM-10:00 PM EST, with a minimum commitment of 12.5 hours per week. Preference will be given to candidates who can increase availability during our peak season (November-early June). This is a 100% remote role, and candidates must have a reliable internet connection and a computer in their home workspace.
Compensation:
Candidates who meet preferred criteria-such as advanced credentials, specialized experience, or demonstrated expertise-may be eligible for higher compensation where applicable (e.g., NY, IL LBS1, NJ Standard, MN licenses). All teachers are compensated for both instructional sessions and designated daily administrative time.
  • B.A/B.S. degree from an accredited institution
  • Massachusetts teaching license
  • Comfortable working with Middle and High school students
