Summary
The Supervisory Medical Support Assistant position is located at Audie L. Murphy VAMC in San Antonio, Texas within Community Care Service. The south Texas Veterans Health care system (STVHCS) is a Tertiary Care Medical Center provides medical specialty support to the VAMC's in Kerrville, and Lackland AFB. STVHCS is a characterized by a large ambulatory care program (which covers a 41-county area of South Texas) administered through Audie L. Murphy and Kerrville Medical centers.

Duties may include but are not limited to:

• Delegates authority necessary to manage assigned clinical administration areas, performing the full range of supervisory duties and responsibilities to effectively utilize the manpower and resources allocated to HAS. This includes setting team goals and technically directing the work of subordinates. It requires planning, - assigning, reviewing, and accepting/rejecting work done by subordinates.
• Makes work assignments, set, or negotiate deadlines, and designate completion dates.
• Develops work schedules for employees to support workload.
• Evaluates work performance and completes performance appraisals and disciplinary actions for all employees assigned to section.
• Performs administrative and personnel management functions for staff supervised.
• Establishes and clearly communicates performance plans and expectations to staff.
• Provides informal feedback and periodically reviews employee performance.
• Resolves informal complaints and grievances.
• Reviews and approves or disapproves routine leave requests.
• Provides information and input to the Chief of HAS concerning promotions, reassignments, recognition of outstanding performance and other personnel issues.
• Coordinates and approves the leave of HAS clinical administrative staff and arranges cross coverage to provide adequate clerical coverage for outpatient and primary care clinics and other related activities.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30a.m. to 4:00p.m. or 8:00a.m. to 4:30p.m.

Basic Requirements:

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Experience. None.
• Education. High school diploma, General Education Development equivalency certificate, or proficiency certificate from a State or territorial-level Board or Department of Education.
• English Language Proficiency. Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
• Licensure/Certification/Registration. None.
• Physical Requirements: See VA Directive and Handbook 5019, Employee Occupational Health Service for requirements.
• Grandfathering Provision. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations: Supervisory Medical Support Assistant, GS-07.

1. Experience. One year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-06).
2. And in addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all the following KSAs (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):
   
   • (a) Ability to provide the full range of administrative and supervisory duties in a patient support setting, which includes assignment of work, performance evaluations, selection of staff, and recommendation of awards and/or advancements.
   • (b) Ability to collaborate, communicate, and demonstrate customer service and interpersonal skills with internal and external customers to ensure quality/continuity of care and ensure compliance with established policies and regulations.
   • (c) Ability to provide briefings, orientations, staff development, and training related to administrative functions in a patient support setting.
   • (d) Ability to delegate authority, evaluate and oversee people and programs, accomplish program goals, and adapt to changing priorities.

Preferred Experience:

1. Experience resolving complex patient-service issues.
2. Experience in assigning work, evaluating staff performance, and administering disciplinary actions.
3. Background in customer service, managing inquiries, and setting positive perceptions.
4. Served as a point-of-contact or participated in special projects.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-07.
Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. Some work may require movement between offices, hospitals, warehouses, and similar areas for meetings and to conduct work. Work may also require walking/standing, in conjunctions with travel to and attendance at meetings and/or conferences away from the work site. Incumbent may carry and lift light items weighing less than 15 pounds.
