Job Description
General Functions :
The Professional Technician On-Call provides academic support and instructional assistance to youth residing at Great Oaks Village and the Orange County Youth Shelter. The tutor collaborates with residential staff, Orange County Public Schools personnel, Case Managers, caregivers, and community partners to promote academic achievement, educational stability, school engagement, and successful graduation outcomes.
The tutor provides individualized and small-group instruction, reinforces classroom learning, supports homework completion and credit recovery, assists with educational planning, and helps youth develop effective study habits while fostering a structured, supportive, and trauma-informed learning environment.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the assigned Residential Service Supervisor.
Representative Duties/Assignments :
Duties may vary based on assignment. The following duties are representative and are not intended to include all responsibilities performed by this classification.
- Provides one-on-one and small-group tutoring in reading, language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and other academic subjects.
- Assists youth with homework assignments, projects, test preparation, online coursework, and classroom instruction.
- Reinforces classroom instruction using Orange County Public Schools curriculum and instructional strategies.
- Assesses students' academic strengths and areas needing improvement and develops individualized tutoring strategies.
- Monitors student progress toward academic goals, graduation requirements, and credit recovery.
- Encourages positive study habits, organization, critical thinking, time management, and personal responsibility.
- Assists youth with virtual learning platforms, educational technology, and computer-based instructional programs.
- Collaborates with teachers, school counselors, Exceptional Student Education (ESE) staff, school social workers, transition contacts, and residential staff to support student success.
- Supports educational stability for youth experiencing placement changes by assisting with school transitions and continuity of educational services.
- Utilizes trauma-informed practices, de-escalation techniques, and positive behavior supports to promote student engagement.
- Maintains accurate attendance records, tutoring logs, academic progress reports, and other required documentation.
- Communicates student progress, academic concerns, and recommendations to program leadership and educational partners.
- Encourages graduation, post-secondary education, career exploration, vocational training, and workforce readiness.
- Maintains confidentiality of educational records in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), agency policies, and applicable laws.
- Models professionalism, respect, and positive interpersonal skills.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications :
- Experience tutoring or working with school-age children or adolescents.
- Ability to successfully complete all required background screenings.
- Valid Florida Driver License preferred.
- Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field.
Florida Educator Certificate or eligibility for certification.
Preferences :
- Experience working with children and adolescents in foster care, residential treatment, juvenile justice, behavioral health, or alternative education settings.
- Experience supporting Exceptional Student Education (ESE), Section 504, English Language Learners (ELL), and students with emotional or behavioral disabilities.
- Training in trauma-informed care, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), and Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI).
