SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETER
Department: Multiple
Pay Grade: U117
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Sign language interpreters facilitate communication for students who are deaf or hard of hearing by faithfully and accurately representing the classroom instruction, teacher/student dialogue, interaction with hearing peers and school staff, and relevant sound information in the mode of communication used by the student, while adhering to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Facilitate communication accurately between deaf/hard of hearing students and teachers, peers, administration, school staff and other personnel using the primary language mode of the student
  • Interpret all classroom interaction, including but not limited to instruction, videos, virtual meetings and documents as indicated by the IEP (Individualized Education Program)
  • Provide interpreting services for physical education, public address announcements, pep rallies, assemblies and field trips
  • May provide interpreting for extracurricular activities when appropriately scheduled
  • Prepare for all interpreting assignments by reviewing lesson plans, videos, textbooks, vocabulary and other materials to be used in class in order to accurately represent the material being presented. Additional research may be required when working in a setting that involves highly technical or complex information in order to gain an understanding of the material presented
  • Must understand a variety of subject matter of discourse so he or she can accurately interpret what is being spoken into sign language
  • May tutor a deaf/hard of hearing individual or group under the teacher's supervision
  • Assess the classroom environment and develop strategies with the educational team regarding seating arrangements, lighting, use of media, turn-taking, and other factors that may impact the interpreting process and access of the classroom content
  • Participate in the IEP (Individualized Education Program) team as a service provider regarding mode of language and insight on the success of communication strategies currently being used
  • Provide interpreting services to identified deaf/hard of hearing parents when necessary to facilitate participation in educational events, such as parent/teacher conferences, IEP (Individualized Education Program) meetings, graduation ceremonies, etc.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, teachers and staff.
  • Perform other related duties as required/assigned if it does not interfere with the interpreting process. Interpreting takes priority and should not be interrupted.
  • Continue professional and skills development through workshops, classes and professional meetings in order to acquire or maintain minimum State qualification or national certification as recognized by the VDDHH (Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing)
  • Adheres to rules set by the Chesapeake Public Schools and the Registry of Interpreters For the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct

QUALIFICATIONS
  • VQAS (Virginia Quality Assurance Screening) Level III or EIPA (Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment) of 3.5 or higher or National Interpreting Certification
  • Provisional - Minimal of VQAS (Virginia Quality Assurance Screening) Level II, EIPA 3.0-3.4, or its equivalent, as determined by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Personnel will have two years from the date of hire to achieve the required qualifications.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Work environment is primarily inside, where the noise and temperature levels are moderate; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions
  • This work requires the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects
  • Work requires standing, walking, fingerspelling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for observing general surroundings and activities.
