What is a virtual scribe?

Virtual scribes are professionals who remotely assist healthcare providers by documenting patient encounters in real-time. They listen to conversations during patient visits, either through secure audio or video connections, and enter relevant information into electronic health records (EHRs). This helps physicians focus more on patient care rather than paperwork. Virtual scribes work from off-site locations, which allows for flexible scheduling and efficient documentation support.

What does a virtual scribe do?

As a virtual scribe, your primary responsibilities are to create medical notes that summarize patient encounters with a physician or nurse. In this role, you may document the encounter based on audio recordings, clarify medical directions or prescription authorizations with the doctor, submit paperwork electronically, prepare referral letters and similar documentation, and perform some administrative tasks. While scribes can work at computers in clinics, there are virtual positions where scribes work from home. Scribe work can be time-sensitive, so virtual scribes often write notes and prepare reports during regular business hours instead of working at a self-determined pace.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual scribe, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Scribe, you need excellent listening skills, fast and accurate typing, strong grammar, and a foundational understanding of medical terminology, usually supported by relevant training or experience. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and secure communication platforms is typically required. Outstanding attention to detail, time management, and discretion are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure the accurate, timely, and confidential documentation of patient encounters, which supports efficient clinical workflows and high-quality patient care.

What are the common challenges faced by virtual scribes when working remotely with healthcare providers?

Virtual Scribes often navigate challenges such as maintaining clear, real-time communication with healthcare providers during patient encounters and ensuring accurate documentation despite working remotely. Adjusting to different providers' documentation styles and managing multiple electronic health record (EHR) systems can also be demanding. However, strong organizational skills, adaptability, and proactive communication help Virtual Scribes effectively support providers and maintain high-quality patient records from a remote setting.

Job description

Full-Time Associate Veterinarian- General Practice/ Urgent Care

Natomas Veterinary Hospital | Sacramento, California

Natomas Veterinary Hospital is seeking an experienced full-time Associate Veterinarian to join our privately owned small animal practice.

For more than 20 years, our hospital has provided comprehensive veterinary care to pets and families throughout the Sacramento area. Natomas Veterinary Hospital has been recognized as the Best Veterinary Hospital in Sacramento by The Sacramento Bee for two consecutive years, reflecting our commitment to high-quality medicine, reliable service, and compassionate patient care.

Our 4-doctor team manages a broad range of cases, including preventive care, urgent and emergency presentations, internal medicine, dentistry, and surgery. We are seeking a veterinarian who demonstrates sound clinical judgment, communicates effectively, and is interested in contributing to the continued development of the hospital.

Practice Environment

Natomas Veterinary Hospital is entering an important period of growth, with plans to expand both our facility and operating hours. Our team includes more than 20 compassionate veterinary professionals who work collaboratively to support efficient patient care and hospital operations. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to help shape this next phase of the practice, support the development of clinical services, and contribute to the growth of the medical team.

We place a strong emphasis on professional development. The ideal candidate enjoys complex internal medicine cases, surgery, and takes an active role in teaching, mentoring, and developing technicians, support staff, veterinary technician students, and veterinary students. This position is well suited for someone seeking a long-term role with opportunities for leadership and increased responsibility as the practice expands.

Our Core Values

Our core values define how we approach patient care, teamwork, professional development, and the continued growth of our practice:

  • To Infinity and Beyond โ€” We set ambitious standards and continually look for ways to advance patient care, our team, and the practice.
  • Lifelong Learning โ€” We believe excellent veterinary medicine requires continuous learning, curiosity, teaching, mentorship, and professional development.
  • Gumby โ€” We value flexibility and adaptability. Veterinary medicine is dynamic, and we expect our team to adjust effectively, solve problems, and work with our clients to optimize their experience and outcomes.
  • Do What You Say โ€” We value accountability, reliability, and follow-through. We honor our commitments to our patients, clients, colleagues, and the practice.
  • Good, Better, Best โ€” We believe improvement is continuous. We evaluate what we do, identify opportunities to improve, and consistently work toward a higher standard of medicine, service, and teamwork.

We are looking for a veterinarian who shares these values and wants to contribute not only as a clinician, but also as a teacher, mentor, and long-term member of the practice.

Equipment and Clinical Resources

Our hospital is equipped with:

  • 4 exam rooms- expanding to 8 rooms
  • Full IDEXX in-house diagnostic suite
  • Digital radiography, including dental radiography
  • Sound Ultrasound
  • Companion therapeutic laser
  • ezyVet and Vet Radar cloud-based medical records
  • Live virtual scribes with AI-assisted medical documentation
  • Mobile specialists are integral in our standard of care (Surgery, cardiology, radiology and internal medicine)

These resources support efficient case management, thorough diagnostics, and a high standard of patient care.

You Might Be a Great Fit If You...
  • Love the variety of general practice and urgent careโ€” wellness, dentistry, surgery, and those complex urgent care or internal medicine cases that make you put your clinical thinking to work
  • Take pride in practicing high-quality medicine while keeping patient comfort and client communication at the center of what you do
  • Enjoy working with a team and believe great veterinary medicine is rarely a solo sport
  • Enjoy surgeryโ€”or want to continue building your surgical skills
  • Like sharing what you know and genuinely enjoy teaching, coaching, and mentoring others
  • Still get excited about learning something new and believe there is always another level to reach
  • Look at a process and occasionally think, โ€œWe can make this betterโ€
  • Want to be part of building something, not simply clocking in for your next shift
  • Are excited about helping us expand our facility, services, team, and operating hours
  • Graduated from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school and meet California licensing requirements.

We are especially interested in someone who wants to grow with the practice. As Natomas Veterinary Hospital expands, we want an associate who is interested in becoming an important part of where the hospital goes nextโ€”as a clinician, mentor, teacher, and potential leader.
