What is a Virtual RN?

A Virtual RN, or Virtual Registered Nurse, is a licensed nurse who provides patient care and support remotely using digital communication tools such as video calls, phone calls, and secure messaging. Virtual RNs can perform tasks like patient assessments, care coordination, health education, and monitoring chronic conditions without being physically present. They often work in telehealth settings, supporting patients at home or in clinical environments by collaborating with onsite healthcare teams. This role helps improve access to healthcare, especially for patients in rural or underserved areas.

What does a Virtual RN do?

Telemedicine is a branch of telehealth, which allows virtual RNs to use electronic information and technology to treat patients. As a virtual RN, your responsibilities are to monitor and care for patients remotely as well as support nurses who are in actual facilities. You work from home or another remote location, using a computer, phone, and various software and programs to review medical records and assist with the assessment and treatment of a patient. Your duties are similar to those of a regular nurse, minus the physical interactions. A virtual nurse may also work in other areas of health care, including telephone triage, insurance claims, and health informatics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Virtual RN?

To thrive as a Virtual RN, you need a current RN license, strong clinical judgment, and experience in remote patient monitoring or telehealth settings. Familiarity with telemedicine platforms, electronic health records (EHRs), and secure communication tools is essential. Excellent communication, adaptability, and problem-solving abilities help build patient trust and ensure effective care delivery from a distance. These skills enable Virtual RNs to provide safe, high-quality care and maintain patient engagement in a digital healthcare environment.

How does a Virtual RN effectively collaborate with on-site healthcare teams to ensure continuity of patient care?

A Virtual RN works closely with on-site nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals by utilizing secure communication platforms, electronic health records, and scheduled video conferences. This collaboration ensures that patient assessments, care plans, and updates are effectively shared and coordinated. Virtual RNs often participate in interdisciplinary team meetings remotely and provide real-time support for patient triage, education, and clinical documentation. Strong communication skills and familiarity with telehealth technologies are vital to maintaining seamless care transitions and high-quality patient outcomes.

Job description

VitalCaring - Deliver Care That Brings Comfort and Dignity
Travel Registered Nurse (RN) - Hospice
Field-Based | Patient & Family-Centered | End-of-Life Care
Travel Nationwide. Make an Impact Where It Matters Most.
Join VitalCaring - Bring Exceptional Care Wherever It's Needed
Are you an experienced RN who thrives on variety, independence, and the opportunity to make an immediate impact?
VitalCaring is building a team of Travel Hospice Registered Nurses who will bring their clinical expertise to Hospice teams across our organization. In this role, you'll step into markets where your experience matters most - supporting patients, strengthening local teams, and helping ensure continuity of exceptional care.
This isn't traditional bedside travel nursing. You'll provide care where patients call home, while experiencing different communities, teams, and markets along the way.
What You'll Do
As a Hospice Travel RN, you'll deploy to VitalCaring hospice branches based on staffing and operational needs, including periods of growth, vacancies, acquisitions, onboarding, and critical staffing needs.
You'll:

  • Provide skilled nursing care to Hospice patients.
  • Complete comprehensive assessments and develop individualized plans of care.
  • Manage patient caseloads and coordinate care with physicians and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Provide education and support to patients, families, and caregivers.
  • Support recovery and independence for Home Health patients and comfort-focused, end-of-life care for Hospice patients.
  • Quickly integrate into new teams, workflows, and patient populations.
  • Help stabilize branch operations and promote consistent clinical practices and patient experiences across markets.
  • Complete timely, accurate clinical documentation and maintain regulatory and quality standards.
  • Participate in on-call responsibilities as assigned.
What We're Looking For
This role is ideal for an experienced clinician who is adaptable, confident, independent, and ready to go where they're needed most.
Required Qualifications:
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Active Compact RN License (NLC), or willingness and ability to obtain Compact Licensure within the established timeframe.
  • Current BLS/CPR certification.
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive Hospice nursing experience.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Ability and willingness to travel extensively based on business need - anticipated 75+% travel, depending on assignment.
  • Previous travel nursing experience preferred.
  • Experience supporting multiple branches, markets, acquisitions, or startup environments preferred.
  • BSN and/or CHPN certification preferred.
What to Expect
Assignments will vary based on organizational need and may include local, regional, and interstate travel. Overnight travel will frequently be required, and some assignments may include weekends or on-call support.
You may rotate between Home Health and Hospice assignments based on business needs and your clinical competencies.
Ready for Nursing That Takes You Further?
If you're energized by new environments, confident in your clinical skills, and looking for a role that combines travel, autonomy, purpose, and meaningful patient care, we'd love to meet you.
Bring your experience. Go where you're needed. Make an impact wherever you land.
