How much do virtual reality neurosciences jobs pay per week?

As of Jun 6, 2026, the average weekly pay for virtual reality neurosciences in the United States is $1,389.29, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $1,163.46 and $1,471.15 per week, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced when integrating virtual reality technology into neuroscience research teams?

One common challenge is ensuring seamless collaboration between neuroscientists, VR developers, and data analysts, as each brings distinct expertise and terminology to the project. Establishing clear communication channels and aligning research objectives can require extra effort. Additionally, adapting experimental protocols to work effectively within virtual environments and validating results against traditional methods can be complex. However, overcoming these hurdles often leads to more innovative and impactful research outcomes.

What is Virtual Reality Neurosciences?

Virtual Reality Neurosciences is an interdisciplinary field that combines virtual reality (VR) technology with neuroscience research and applications. It involves using immersive VR environments to study brain function, behavior, and cognitive processes, or to develop new treatments for neurological conditions. Researchers and clinicians use VR to simulate real-world scenarios, enhance neurorehabilitation, and investigate how the brain responds to different stimuli. This field is rapidly growing, offering innovative ways to understand and improve brain health.

What is the difference between Virtual Reality Neurosciences vs Virtual Reality Developers?

AspectVirtual Reality NeurosciencesVirtual Reality Developers
Required CredentialsNeuroscience degrees, research experienceComputer science, programming skills
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, academic institutionsTech companies, development studios
Industry UsageMedical research, cognitive studiesGame design, simulation development
Common Search IntentUnderstanding neuroscience applications in VRCreating VR content and applications

Virtual Reality Neurosciences focuses on applying neuroscience principles to VR technology, often involving research and clinical studies. In contrast, Virtual Reality Developers primarily design and build VR applications and experiences. While both roles may use similar tools, their core objectives and environments differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a Virtual Reality Neurosciences role, and why are they important?

To thrive in Virtual Reality Neurosciences, you need a strong background in neuroscience or cognitive science, as well as proficiency in VR technology and experimental design, typically supported by an advanced degree. Familiarity with VR development platforms (such as Unity or Unreal Engine), neuroimaging tools, and data analysis software is often required. Creativity, analytical thinking, and effective collaboration are crucial soft skills for innovating and working across interdisciplinary teams. These competencies enable the development of impactful VR applications for research or therapy, advancing both scientific understanding and practical outcomes.

Job description

Description
POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE
New York University Tandon School of Engineering
The Dynamical Systems Laboratory (DSL) at NYU Tandon School of Engineering is seeking to hire a Post Doctoral Associate to work in cutting-edge research focused on human-swarm interaction, virtual reality, and robotics. We seek independent, motivated, and creative individuals to conduct research in human-computer interaction, human behavior, and virtual reality. The research will specifically focus on developing intuitive user interfaces to enable non-expert operators to control robotic swarms during disaster response.
The DSL was established 16 years ago by Prof. Maurizio Porfiri (Institute Professor at Tandon School of Engineering and Director of the Center for Urban Science and Progress, with appointments at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, the Department of Biomedical Engineering, the Department of Civil and Urban Engineering, and the Center for Urban Science and Progress). The DSL is home to a highly collaborative, vibrant group of young scholars with complementary expertise across theory, experiments, and computations. The director, Prof. Porfiri, is the author of more than 350 journal publications and the recipient of numerous professional awards (Wikipedia/Maurizio_Porfiri).
New York University (NYU) is one of the top private universities in the United States, and the Tandon School of Engineering, located in Brooklyn, NY, is deeply committed to excellence in teaching and learning. Tandon fosters student and faculty innovation and entrepreneurship that make a difference in the world.
Expectations
Candidates will be responsible for leading the design and testing of virtual reality systems, mentoring undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students, coordinating outreach activities, and supporting proposal writing and grantsmanship.
The successful candidate will have a demonstrated background in designing and implementing human-computer or human-robot interfaces; as exemplified by a strong publication record. Previous experience on virtual reality simulations (e.g., Unity, C#, VR headsets) or user-interface prototyping for testing usability and interaction is desired.
Salary range
In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary for this position is $62,500 depending on the candidate's experience and qualification. This is a one-year position with an opportunity for renewal.
Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD in computer engineering, computer science, human-centered technology, innovation & design, robotics, neuroscience, or related fields. We welcome applicants with recent PhDs and individuals seeking additional postdoctoral training. Candidates will be required to present eligibility to work in the United States.
Application Instructions
Applicants should submit, as one pdf, the following information:
  • an up-to-date CV that includes a complete list of publications,
  • a research statement that describes their interest and goals and how their research relates to this position,
  • copies of up to three relevant scientific papers,
  • names and contact information for three references.

All application materials should be submitted electronically via Interfolio and to: gl2861@nyu.edu
Review of applications will begin as soon as possible and will continue until the position is filled. Expected start date is: February 1, 2025.
