What is the difference between Virtual Prototype Design vs CAD Designer?

AspectVirtual Prototype DesignCAD Designer
Primary FocusCreating digital, functional prototypes of products or systemsDeveloping detailed 2D/3D technical drawings and models
Tools & SoftwareSimulation software, 3D modeling, virtual testing toolsCAD software like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CATIA
Work EnvironmentProduct development teams, engineering labs, virtual simulation platformsDesign offices, engineering departments, manufacturing firms
Required CredentialsEngineering background, CAD knowledge, simulation skillsDesign or engineering degree, CAD certification

Virtual Prototype Design focuses on creating digital, functional models for testing and validation, often using simulation tools. CAD Designers primarily develop detailed technical drawings and 3D models for manufacturing. While both roles require CAD skills and engineering knowledge, Virtual Prototype Design emphasizes virtual testing and simulation, whereas CAD Design centers on detailed documentation and design creation.

Job description

Role: Design Engineer – Closures Engineering
Location: Warren, MI, 48092
Duration: 6 months (can extend) |100% on-site
Looking for someone with 5-10 years exp

Looking for sheet metal domain.
Must Have Skills:
Own CAD design of closure systems and components in Siemens NX / Teamcenter (or equivalent), including skins, inner panels, reinforcements, hardware interfaces, seals, glazing, and brackets.
Develop and maintain master sections and detailed engineering criteria for closures (hemming, gaps & flushness, sealing, latch/hinge axes, load paths, drain paths, etc.).
Perform styling feasibility for closure surfaces, proposing design solutions that balance aesthetic intent with engineering, manufacturing, and regulatory constraints.
Ensure designs meet manufacturability and stamping requirements (thickness, draw direction, splits, springback risk, joining strategy) by working closely with stamping/tooling and plant teams.
Define and maintain robust joining and attachment strategies (spot welds, SPR, FDS, structural adhesives,
bolts, clips, weld nuts, sealers) to achieve structural, durability, and quality targets.
Coordinate virtual build and design integration activities (clashes, clearances, packaging of hinges/latches/ strikers, sensors, wiring, and sealing) across Closures, Upper Structure, Exterior, and adjacent systems.
Support virtual validation / CAE by delivering analysis ready math, incorporating CAE feedback into design updates, and iterating to close issues (stiffness, modal, crash load paths, abuse load cases, etc.).
Closure hardware integration (hinges, latches, strikers, checks, bumpers, seals, glass, regulators).
Stamping & hemming processes and their impact on design.
Gap & flush, fit & finish, and dimensional robustness.
Regulatory and safety considerations affecting closures (e.g., impact zones, intrusion, corrosion/drainage).
Roles & Responsibilities
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align designs with product requirements

Conduct prototyping, testing, and validation of closure designs

Use CAD and simulation tools to optimize closure performance.
Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, best practices, and sustainability goals.
