What is a virtual private equity intern?

A Virtual Private Equity Intern is a student or recent graduate who supports a private equity firm remotely, typically assisting with tasks such as market research, financial analysis, due diligence, and deal sourcing. These internships provide hands-on experience in the private equity industry without requiring interns to be physically present in an office. Through virtual collaboration tools, interns work closely with investment professionals to learn about the deal process and the evaluation of potential investments. This role is ideal for individuals interested in finance, investments, and gaining exposure to the private equity sector while enjoying flexibility in their location.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual private equity intern?

To thrive as a Virtual Private Equity Intern, you need a solid understanding of financial analysis, business valuation, and market research, often supported by coursework in finance, economics, or related fields. Familiarity with Excel, financial modeling software, and data platforms like Bloomberg or PitchBook is typically required. Strong attention to detail, communication skills, and the ability to work independently are crucial soft skills in a remote setting. These skills and qualities are vital for producing accurate analyses, supporting investment decisions, and collaborating effectively within a distributed team.

What types of projects or tasks can a virtual private equity intern expect to work on during an internship?

As a Virtual Private Equity Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of analytical and research-focused projects. Typical responsibilities include conducting market research, performing company financial analysis, assisting with due diligence on potential investments, and preparing investment memos or presentations for senior team members. You may also help track portfolio performance and participate in virtual meetings with investment professionals. This remote environment requires strong self-motivation, effective communication skills, and the ability to collaborate with colleagues across different locations and time zones.

Job description

Location Designation: Hybrid - 4 days per week

About Apogem Capital

With offices in New York, Chicago, and Richmond, Apogem Capital is a leading alternatives investor, with decades of experience investing in the middle market and approximately $42 billion in assets under management across Private Credit, Private Equity, and Private Real Assets. By offering a full range of capital solutions, Apogem delivers innovative solutions to both private equity sponsors and portfolio companies while generating access to highly sought-after opportunities for our Investors. At Apogem Capital, we pride ourselves on attracting and retaining the best talent by offering a collaborative culture, opportunities for career development and growth, and competitive benefits.

Role Overview:

Apogem is seeking a Tax Intern to join the team for our 11-week Summer Internship Program. This internship is designed for students who are curious about tax, accounting, finance, or financial services and want to gain practical experience in an area they may not have had the opportunity to explore in the classroom. Tax offers a specialized career path with opportunities to build valuable technical expertise across compliance, structuring, reporting, and other areas that are critical to financial organizations. As an intern, you'll gain hands-on exposure to partnership and private equity tax work while developing skills that can be valuable across accounting firms, financial institutions, and other tax-focused organizations. You do not need prior tax or internship experience to be successful in this role. We are looking for students who are eager to learn, willing to ask questions, and interested in exploring whether tax could be a fit for their long-term career.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Assisting with the preparation and review of workpapers supporting partnership tax returns, including Forms 1065 and related Schedules K-1.
  • Supporting the tracking of tax capital accounts, allocations of income and loss, and related calculations across multiple Apogem entities.
  • Compiling and organizing information needed for federal, state, and local tax filings, including state apportionment calculations.
  • Supporting tax compliance, reporting, and other projects based on team and business needs.
  • Working with multiple tax professionals and gaining exposure to different areas of the tax function.
  • Participating in meaningful projects that provide insight into how tax considerations support private equity and financial services businesses.

A Broad Learning Experience

Our internship is structured to provide exposure beyond a single area of tax. Interns may have opportunities to rotate across tax teams or work with different members of the organization, helping you develop a broader understanding of tax specialties and how the different functions work together.

Through this experience, you can expect to:

  • Build practical tax and accounting skills.
  • Gain exposure to private equity and partnership taxation.
  • Learn from multiple professionals across the tax organization.
  • Develop professional relationships and expand your network.
  • Strengthen analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills that are transferable across future roles.
  • Gain specialized experience that can help differentiate you as you pursue future internships and career opportunities.
What You'll Bring:
  • Available to work full-time for the entire 11-week Summer Internship Program, May through August, 2027.
  • Able to work approximately 37.5 hours per week.
  • Able to work in a hybrid environment, including three days per week on-site in New York City.
  • Are studying accounting, finance, economics, business, or a related field, although students from other academic backgrounds with a demonstrated interest are also encouraged to apply.
  • Have completed at least one accounting course or have some familiarity with basic accounting concepts.
  • Are interested in learning more about tax, accounting, private equity, or financial services.
  • Bring a strong work ethic, attention to detail, curiosity, and a willingness to learn.

Previous corporate, accounting, or tax internship experience is not required. We recognize that students build relevant skills through coursework, campus involvement, part-time work, volunteer experiences, and other opportunities.
