Description Acute Hemodialysis Registered Nurse - Per Diem Shift: 6:45am - 7:15pm Job Description:

PATIENT POPULATION:
The patient population served can be geriatric and adult. This also includes services which affect facility staff, physicians, visitors, vendors and the general public.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Medical/Surgical RN Clinical Manager, the Acute Hemodialysis RN delivers safe and therapeutic Hemodialysis treatment to the chronically ill patient with Chronic Renal Failure in the Acute Hospital setting. In addition to Hemodialysis, the nurses who are trained to work in the Acute in-patient setting also deliver safe and therapeutic Peritoneal Dialysis. The Acute Hemodialysis RN is responsible for the assessment, treatment and care appropriate to the ages of the patients served and demonstrates the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patient’s needs.

Must be able to work normal/scheduled working hours to include Holidays, call-backs, weeknights, weekends, and on-call. Agrees to participate, as directed, in emergencies and community disasters during scheduled and unscheduled hours. As a designated disaster service worker you are required to assist in times of need pursuant to the California Emergency Services Act.

To perform this job successfully, must have two years of experience as a Hemodialysis RN in an acute/chronic care setting with training in Peritoneal Dialysis followed by at least six months experience in Peritoneal Dialysis. Exceptions may be made to provide the Peritoneal Dialysis training should the need arise.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence if required. Communication/writing skills.

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages if required. Competent in medication calculations.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have basic computer skills.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must have and maintain current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of California and current BLS certification or obtain within orientation process, prior to hands-on patient care.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • 1 * As recommended by the ANNA standards of clinical practice for dialysis, the staff Acute Hemodialysis RN will administer patient care to those patients needing hemodialysis. Responsibilities include evaluating and providing nursing care with the ability to identify patient problems, Dialysis complications and emergency conditions and taking appropriate action. Ability to provide education, monitoring, maintenance of equipment, ordering supplies, implement physician orders for medications, initiate vascular access appointments with follow-up, dietary education, psychological, social, financial assistance referrals to the SW for those with Chronic Renal Failure. Provides Dialysis education to patients and their support systems when applicable. Must provide documentation and maintain all records.
  • 2 * Participates in a Quality Improvement Program under the supervision of the Med/Surg RN Clinical Manager.
  • 3 * Assists in establishing, implementing, and interpretation of policy with authorized limits.
  • 4 * Demonstrates adherence to the Joint Commission "National Patient Safety Goals for Hospitals" as defined by scope of practice.
  • 5 * Assists Med/Surg Clinical Manager with new Acute Hemodialysis RNs using the principles of orientation by agreement whenever applicable.
  • 6 * Follows all Infection Control policies of the Hospital.
  • 7 * Participates in appropriate meetings and Hospital Committees.
  • 8 Be in attendance on site and arrive to work on time.
