Position Summary
TheDepartment of Surgery at the University of New Mexico (UNM) School ofMedicine is seeking a full-time surgeon with training, experience, andexpertise in Burn Surgery, to serve as Director of the UNM BurnProgram. The successful candidate will lead the only adult and pediatricburn program in the state of New Mexico.
Candidates withtraining in either Plastic Surgery or General Surgery are encouraged to apply.A Fellowship in Burn Surgery is highly desirable. This is an open-rank,full-time 1.0 FTE academic faculty position.
The successfulcandidate must be able to direct the comprehensive management of major burnpatients including acute resuscitation, intensive care, burn surgery, and haveexpertise in state-of-the-art management of complex burn injuries including theuse of newer skin-coverage techniques. They should be familiar withreconstructive surgery techniques, including laser reconstruction. The selectedcandidate will collaborate with physical and occupational therapy to ensure wedevelop robust care pathways for rehabilitation, and with social work/ casemanagement to facilitate successful community re-integration. The candidatewill be committed to maintaining the highest standards of holistic burnmanagement as demonstrated by meeting ABA quality criteria, as we work towardsbuilding an ABA-verified burn center.
The successfulcandidate will partner with our existing burn surgeons, including Dr. SharmilaDissanaike, Past-President of the American Burn Association and Chair of theDepartment of Surgery, who is currently serving as Interim Burn Director. Thecore burn team includes several APPs and rotating residents from both GeneralSurgery and Plastic Surgery. The core team is further supported by members ofthe Division of Plastic Surgery who provide additional operative and weekendcoverage, the Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery that provides care inthe acute resuscitative phase and after-hours coverage, the Center for AdultCritical Care that provides comprehensive 24/7/365 adult ICU coverage and thePediatric Intensive Care Unit that provides 24/7/365 ICU coverage of children.Both ICUs have 24/7 in-house attending intensivist coverage.
As a full-timeacademic surgeon, the selected candidate is expected to lead burn education formedical students, residents, fellows, and faculty across specialties involvedin the care of burn patients, including nurses, first-responders, and othersinvolved in burn care. Participation in a telemedicine program currently indevelopment to better serve the needs of the region is also expected.
An interest inadvancing the science of burn surgery through basic, translational, clinicaland/or outcomes research is highly desirable. The successful candidate mustdemonstrate the ability to work collaboratively, lead a multidisciplinary team,and have a commitment to advancing the clinical, educational, and academicmissions of the Department. There will be strong mentorship and sponsorship ofthe Burn Director in developing local, regional, national and internationalprominence as a leader in burn surgery.
Qualifications
MinimumEducation and Experience Requirements
  • Medical Doctoror equivalent
  • Completion ofan ACGME- accredited residency in either Plastic Surgery or General Surgery
  • Board-certified/Board-eligiblein Plastic Surgery or General Surgery
  • Eligible forNew Mexico Board licensure
  • Eligible forNew Mexico Pharmacy certification and federal DEA registration
  • Must beeligible to work in the U.S.
PreferredQualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Fellowship inBurn Surgery
  • Fellowship inSurgical Critical Care and/or Fellowship in Acute Care Surgery
  • Board-certified/Boardeligible in Surgical Critical Care
  • Fellow of theAmerican Burn Association (FABA)
  • Experience as aprimary burn surgeon at an ABA verified burn center
  • Interest andexperience in burn research
  • Experience inburn reconstruction and complex wound management
  • A demonstratedcommitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of NewMexico and to the success of the university's mission to serve local and globalcommunities
