Job description
The Outpatient Pediatric Plastic Surgery Nurse supports care coordination and clinic visits for pediatric patients who have developmental abnormalities and birth defects in the head and face, neck hands, lips and palate. S/he functions as member of the interdisciplinary clinical team; s/he utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate patient care. S/he uses a high level of clinical knowledge to fulfill patient needs, ensures efficient patient care, and provides patient education when necessary. The clinic nurse acts as a patient advocate and as a liaison between insurers, inpatient/outpatient services, patients/families and all other necessary healthcare services to manage and facilitate efficient and timely coordination of care.
The Outpatient Pediatric Plastic Surgery Nurse is responsible for coordinating outpatient services and needs for a panel of pediatric patients and providers in the ambulatory setting. His/her responsibilities include both in-clinic procedures, managing the outpatient plastic surgery clinic flow, as well as assisting with insurance authorization and prior medication authorizations, contacting home health companies, pre-operative and post-operative counseling regarding procedures, assuring DME and other home supplies are adequate, assisting with medication refill requests, patient teaching and assisting in the overall coordination of time patient care. This position is 100% in-person onsite and requires flexibility to work at the following campuses: Oakland, San Francisco, and satellite clinics.
Required Qualifications:
- Two (2) or more years of recent pediatric medical/surgical experience as a registered nurse
- This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working at an Academic Medical Center
- Experience with wound care and orthopedics
- California Children's Service Paneled
Licenses/Certifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) or Higher
- Current California Registered Nursing License
- Current American Heart Association CPR Certification
- California Childrens' Services paneled within first 6 months of hire

Functions as patient advocate and facilitates patient/family participation in decisions regarding their care. Facilitates communication between caregivers, providers and other necessary support services i.e. returning calls to pharmacies and caregivers to facilitate prescription orders and renewals. Assisting in creating/reorganizing teaching materials for patient education.
Medication Management: Works as part of a multidisciplinary team to obtain medication authorizations, coordinates medication ordering and assures safe medication administration. Assists with prescription refills. Documents and maintains a record of prescription refills, medication authorization and all patient interactions in the electronic health record.
Other Duties: Coordinates with operating room staff to assure that supplies, special equipment and medications are available for the patient. Maintains list of pending surgeries in the operating room of patients requiring implant, tissue expanders, and custom implants. Coordinates pre- and post-op photos as needed. Maintains and orders clinical supplies and forms for clinic. Responsible for ordering, stocking, data entry, and bookkeeping including purchase costs, sales income for injectables and skin care cosmetic products. Apprise residents of pre-op work-ups, patient transfers and changes in operating room schedules. Provide information to potential patients regarding procedures available at UCSF.

- Assessment: Completes nursing history that includes patient and family medical history, psychosocial, cultural factors, nutritional and special needs of the patients' physical status within department timeframes. Performs patient care procedures required by scope of clinical assignment and in accordance with the Department and unit policy and procedures. Responds and participates in the management of emergency clinical issues. Administers medications and blood components safely. Performs waived laboratory testing according to departmental policy.
- Evaluating: Documents patient outcomes and responses to nursing interventions. Utilizes theoretical knowledge and clinical skill to develop alternate nursing approaches to patient and family care.
- Teaching: Identifies patient, family, and/or patient caregiver's learning needs and potential barriers to learning. Identifies patient, family, and /or patient caregiver's teaching interventions specific to patient's diagnosis and ability to learn, collaborating with other disciplines as appropriate. Involves patient, family, and/or patient's caregiver in teaching. Evaluates the patient, family, and/or patient caregiver's response to teaching. Provides information to patients and families regarding pre-operative evaluations and post-operative expectations, wound care, drain care, and complications.
