Description

Are you a student currently enrolled in an accredited college looking to launch your career in real estate development, urban planning, or affordable housing? Vancouver Housing Authority (VHA) is seeking an organized, detail-oriented, analytical, and community-minded student who is proactive and possesses strong communication skills to support our real estate development team.

The VHA provides affordable housing and housing assistance for more than 12,000 residents of Clark County, Washington. In addition to affordable housing, the VHA's community development activities also shape the lives of the people and neighborhoods we serve.

The Development Intern will assist the Real Estate Department with various activities related to the creation and preservation of affordable housing throughout Clark County. The intern will have the opportunity to participate in design meetings, outreach events, develop financial models, and learn how to manage development projects.

Position functions include assisting project managers with:

  • Coordination of third-party professional services for architectural, environmental, construction, legal, appraisal, and market study services.
  • Preparation of development project budgets, operating proformas, and funding applications.
  • Development of community engagement activities and events.
  • Coordination of various planning, zoning, environmental, and permit approval processes.
  • Collection and organization of historical development documents from past VHA projects.

Pay and Benefits:

  • In addition to receiving hands-on experience, you'll receive $20 per hour.
  • This is a part-time position working 18 hours per week. At least 12 hours must be worked from the VHA office in Downtown Vancouver. (It's a reverse commute from Portland!).
  • The internship start date is flexible, and hours can be scheduled to accommodate the student's needs, but must be consistent and fall between 8:00 am and 5:30 pm Monday - Friday.
  • You'll be contributing to meaningful work that addresses affordable housing and homelessness in our community.

Requirements

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of real estate finance and development.
  • Grand writing, development, and operating budgets, and real estate transactions.

Ability to:

  • Communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Assist with the preparation of competitive funding applications.
  • Manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Communicate complex information to a variety of audiences.

Education/Experience:

  • Student currently enrolled in an accredited college in the Portland/SW Washington metro area, majoring in Urban Planning, Urban Studies, Real Estate, Real Estate Development, Public Administration, or Public Policy.
  • Completion of at least one year of curriculum in the above-mentioned areas of study.
  • Coursework and/or related experience in the real estate industry or urban planning strongly preferred.

A cover letter and resume are required when applying for this position. For more information on the Vancouver Housing Authority, please visit our website at www.vhausa.org. Please note that candidates deemed to best match our requirements will be contacted for an interview. We do not discuss application status during the selection process. Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis until the position is filled.
