What are virtual internships?

Virtual internships are work experience programs that are completed remotely rather than in a traditional office setting. Interns communicate and collaborate with their employers and teammates through digital tools such as email, video conferencing, and project management platforms. These internships offer flexibility, allowing students or recent graduates to gain valuable skills and experience from anywhere in the world. Virtual internships are available across various fields, including marketing, IT, finance, and more.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a virtual internship?

To thrive in a Virtual Internship, you need strong self-motivation, time management, and foundational knowledge relevant to the industry or role, often supported by current enrollment in a degree program. Familiarity with remote collaboration tools like Zoom, Slack, Google Workspace, and project management platforms is typically required. Excellent written communication, adaptability, and proactive problem-solving are standout soft skills in this position. These skills and qualities are vital for efficiently contributing to projects, building professional relationships, and achieving goals in a remote work environment.

What are some unique challenges of participating in a virtual internship, and how can I overcome them?

A key challenge in virtual internships is staying engaged and communicative with your team despite the lack of in-person interaction. It can also be harder to build relationships and receive immediate feedback. To overcome these challenges, proactively schedule regular check-ins with your supervisor, participate actively in virtual meetings, and make use of collaboration tools like Slack or Microsoft Teams. Setting clear goals and maintaining an organized work schedule will help you stay accountable and make a strong impression, which is crucial for gaining valuable experience and potential references.

Company:

Launch your career with Boeing, celebrated by WayUp as a Top 100 Internship Program in the US for 2026! We are seeking motivated, enthusiastic, and innovative students to join our 2027 intern program.

Boeing is the world's largest aerospace company and leading manufacturer of commercial jetliners, defense, space and security systems, and service provider of aftermarket support. We are engineers and technicians. Skilled scientists and thinkers. Bold innovators and dreamers. Join us, and build something better for yourself, for our customers and for the world.

In more than 65 countries, you'll find our people working on advances like remarkable aircraft comprised mostly of composite materials. Versatile and powerful jet fighters and rotorcraft that explore new uses of technology. Aircraft powered by hydrogen and biofuels. And even blended wing body and hybrid-electric aircraft.

Boeing has shaped the course of human history through aerospace innovations. Today, because of our amazing people and powerful technologies, our products connect the globe, protect freedom, and advance scientific discovery around the world. From the depths of the ocean, to Mars and beyond, we're inspiring the next century of explorers - we invite you to join us on the journey ahead!

The Boeing Security & Fire Operations (S&FO) is seeking talented, forward-thinking students ready to join our energetic team, gaining hands-on experience across corporate site security, aviation security, emergency preparedness, business resilience, and fire protection engineering. As an intern, you will contribute to real-world projects in your specific function all while supporting daily operations in risk assessments, monitoring access control and camera systems, airport/airfield security protocols, and compliance documentation. This is a unique opportunity to work cross-functionally with facilities, operations, legal, and emergency response teams, and to see how layered protection strategies come together to keep people and operations safe.

In this role you'll help design and test emergency exercises and business continuity playbooks, analyze vulnerabilities and mitigation options, and assist in industrial fire engineering assessments. You'll learn to translate technical findings into clear briefings for stakeholders, support aviation security audits and access-control improvements, and contribute to after-action reports that shape future resilience. Ideal candidates are curious, detail-oriented, and driven by purpose-ready to learn complex systems, think creatively under pressure, and make a measurable impact on organizational safety and continuity.

As an intern at Boeing, you'll gain hands-on experience, learn from experts, and collaborate with teams that do truly amazing things.
Over the course of our 10-12-week internship experience you will have the opportunity to:

  • Work directly with a mentor in your field of study while finding solutions to real world problems
  • Experience our products up close by touring our state-of-the-art manufacturing and research facilities
  • Interact directly with our company leaders to discuss strategy and the future of Boeing
  • Build a lasting professional network through social events and engaging activities
