Virtual Program: School Year Teacher Job Description 


Background 

Alexander Twilight Academy (ATA) is a free longitudinal high school and college access program that provides hard-working, high-potential students from under-resourced backgrounds with the highest-quality educational and life-enriching opportunities. Named after the first Black American to graduate from college in the United States, Alexander Twilight Academy makes a long-term commitment to serve each student and family we admit from middle school through college and beyond. ATA develops leaders who will change the world and empowers the next generation of great thinkers, creators, and changemakers to live meaningful lives of passion and purpose. Through rigorous, year-round academic programming, support, advocacy, enrichment, and mentorship, ATA prepares middle school students to earn admission to and thrive at the nation's top high schools, colleges, and beyond. 


Teaching Position Summary 

The School Year Teacher will be responsible for attending and actively participating in weekly virtual community meetings with students in grades 6โ€“8. They will also plan, facilitate, and assess lessons for 1-2 classes of 15 students. In addition, the teacher will attend weekly evening staff meetings focused on asset-based discussions to collaboratively support student success.

Teachers will work with the Director and Associate Director of Middle School Program, other teachers, and the ATA staff to create a welcoming, academically challenging, and engaging environment for all students in the program.   


Virtual Staff Orientation: September 9th at 6:30 pm

Program Dates: September 22nd, 2026, through June 2nd, 2027 

Location: Virtual via Zoom on Tuesday or Wednesday from 5:20 pm to 8:30 pm

Responsibilities 

  • Attend the Community Meeting and support small-group discussions. 
  • Lead 1-2 sections with approximately 15 students on Tuesday or Wednesday evening
  • Design and adapt a curriculum for 6th or 7th grade students that is aligned to program goals
  • Be available for virtual office hours from 7:50 to 8:30 pm on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings before and after teaching. 
  • Internalize weekly prepared lesson plans and create appropriate corresponding materials.
  • Post all materials to Google Classroom and provide students with feedback 
  • Maintain the gradebook, which is shared with the Director and the Associate Director 
  • Keep families updated about student progress 
  • Attend and support 4 in-person ATA-sponsored Saturday Events


Qualifications and Experience 

  • Bachelorโ€™s Degree
  • At least 2 years of teaching experience (preferred grade level experience: 6th-12th) 
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities, including classroom management and team building skills 
  • Experience implementing differentiated teaching strategies
