Virtual Fall Environmental Internship information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Virtual Fall Environmental Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Fall Environmental Intern, you typically need foundational knowledge in environmental science, research skills, and current enrollment in a related degree program. Familiarity with data analysis tools like Excel, GIS software, or online collaboration platforms is often required. Strong written communication, time management, and proactive problem-solving set standout interns apart in a remote setting. These skills ensure accurate research, effective teamwork, and the ability to contribute meaningfully to environmental projects from a distance.

What are some common challenges faced during a virtual fall environmental internship, and how can interns overcome them?

A common challenge in a virtual fall environmental internship is maintaining effective communication and collaboration with team members, as much of the work is done remotely. Interns may also find it difficult to gain hands-on field experience due to the virtual format. To overcome these challenges, interns should proactively schedule regular check-ins with their supervisors, make use of collaborative tools like shared documents and messaging platforms, and seek out virtual networking or training opportunities offered by the organization. Staying organized and self-motivated is key to making the most of the remote internship experience.

What is a Virtual Fall Environmental Internship?

A Virtual Fall Environmental Internship is a remote internship program typically offered during the fall semester, where students or recent graduates gain hands-on experience working on environmental projects, research, or advocacy from a distance. Interns may support tasks such as data analysis, environmental education, policy research, or digital outreach, all conducted online rather than in a physical office or field setting. These internships allow participants to develop professional skills, contribute to sustainability efforts, and build connections in the environmental sector while accommodating flexible schedules and locations.

REA is accepting resumes and portfolios from civil and/or environmental engineering students for a paid internship for our office in Indianapolis, IN. We are open to candidates seeking three-month or ten-month long internships/Co-ops.

Submission Deadline: July 1, 2026

Fall 2026 Internships

We encourage you to develop your career and grow your skills with us through our internship program. We believe that all team members, no matter their experience level, can make long-lasting impacts for our clients and their projects, and our firm. Through this opportunity, you will help us cultivate a culture of life-long learning and mentorship in support of our mission.

Overview

As an intern at REA, you will have the opportunity to participate in all stages of project development as part of an interdisciplinary team, including master planning, conceptual/schematic design, design development, construction documentation, permitting, and construction administration. You will work closely with our staff of engineers, landscape architects, and planners on a wide variety of commercial, institutional, and municipal planning and design projects. Specific responsibilities will include assisting project teams with the production of AutoCAD construction documents and details; preparation of conceptual site design plans; preparing quantity take-offs and cost estimates; construction site inspection services; and assisting project managers with client meeting materials and exhibits. Interns will have a wide range of work opportunities to gain real world experience on every aspect of a project.

‍Capstone Project

REA offers a unique experience for our internship program with a capstone project where all interns will develop research or help solve real-world design challenges on a specific topic. At the conclusion of the program, interns will share their project and findings with the entire studio.
