Virtual Engineers collaborate with teams online, leveraging cloud computing, simulations, and remote access technologies to complete their tasks efficiently. This role is increasingly in demand due to the rise of remote work and digital transformation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Virtual Engineer position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Virtual Engineer, you need strong technical expertise in systems engineering, software or network infrastructure, and a relevant degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with cloud-based platforms, remote collaboration tools, and certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect or Cisco CCNP are often required. CIS is growing, and we invite both our experienced incumbents and new team members to be part of what's next. Incumbents bring invaluable mission insight, while new talent adds fresh ideas and energy. Together, we'll strengthen continuity and drive the next generation of innovation.

MEANINGFUL WORK AND PERSONAL IMPACT

As a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) Engineer supporting CIS, you will design, integrate, and enhance secure, high performance virtual desktop environments across multiple networks and locations. You will engineer VDI architecture, validate new desktop baselines, improve service performance, and ensure users can access critical applications and services reliably from any approved endpoint. Your expertise strengthens operational readiness, improves the enterprise desktop experience, and advances the modernization of virtual desktop capabilities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Engineer, integrate, and test virtual desktop platforms across multiple networks, enclaves, and geographic regions, including hypervisor, RDS, VDI pools, and cloud-based desktop solutions

  • Design, build, and modify VDI environments to meet new technology, capacity, performance, and user experience requirements
  • Analyze, troubleshoot, and optimize VDI components at the Tier III level, including hardware, software, and network dependencies required to deliver secure virtual desktop services
  • Test new VDI technologies and solutions in accordance with defined RMF processes, including acquisition risk evaluation, security scans, and configuration validation
  • Engineer solutions for physical and virtual desktop delivery platforms, supporting reductions in deployment time and improving end-user experience across environments
  • Collaborate with engineering, cyber, and operations teams to implement engineered VDI solutions, support accreditation, and transition capabilities into production environments
  • Document engineering designs, test results, SOPs, and integration steps for VDI deployments and enhancements

WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO SUCCEED:

  • EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in an IT-related field, or 8-12+ years of relevant IT experience in lieu of a degree
  • CERTIFICATION: Meet DoD 8140 Information Assurance Workforce certification requirements (e.g. Security+ CE, etc.)
  • ADDITIONAL CERTIFICATION: Citrix Certified Associate-Virtualization, Azure Fundamentals, or an industry equivalent VDI certification
  • CLEARANCE: Active TS/SCI clearance with a favorable polygraph
  • Hands on engineering experience with VDI technologies (Citrix, VMware, Azure Virtual Desktop, or similar)
  • Strong understanding of VDI architecture, hypervisors, desktop baselines, drivers, certificates, and secure remote access technologies
  • Familiarity with patching, vulnerability management, secure configuration baselines, and accreditation processes
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex VDI performance, compatibility, and integration issues
  • Strong documentation, communication, and cross team collaboration skills
  • US citizenship required
