Virtual Dermatologist information

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a virtual dermatologist?

To excel as a Virtual Dermatologist, you must possess a medical degree with board certification in dermatology, strong diagnostic abilities, and up-to-date clinical knowledge. Familiarity with telemedicine platforms, digital imaging tools, and secure patient data systems is necessary for effective and compliant remote consultations. Excellent communication skills, empathy, and adaptability are crucial to connect with patients virtually and collaborate with other healthcare professionals. These competencies ensure accurate diagnoses, positive patient experiences, and high-quality remote care delivery.

What is a virtual dermatologist?

A Virtual Dermatologist is a licensed skin specialist who provides remote consultations, diagnoses, and treatment plans for patients via telemedicine platforms. Using photos, video calls, and digital health records, they assess skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and skin cancer. This role allows dermatologists to offer expert care without requiring in-person visits, making dermatology services more accessible. Virtual Dermatologists may work independently, for telehealth companies, or as part of a larger medical practice.

What field of virtual dermatology makes the most money?

In virtual dermatology, subspecialties such as cosmetic dermatology and teledermatology tend to be the most lucrative due to higher demand for aesthetic procedures and specialized consultations. Dermatologists with advanced certifications, experience, and the ability to perform procedures like laser treatments or cosmetic injections often earn higher income in virtual settings. Revenue also depends on patient volume, platform fees, and the complexity of cases handled.

What are common challenges faced by virtual dermatologists, and how are they addressed?

Virtual Dermatologists often face challenges such as limited ability to perform in-person examinations or procedures and the need to rely on patient-provided images or video quality. These challenges are addressed through rigorous patient education on how to capture and share high-quality images, the use of advanced telemedicine tools, and clear protocols for determining when an in-person referral is necessary. Collaboration with primary care providers or local healthcare facilities may also be required for comprehensive care. Despite the remote nature of the work, maintaining clear and empathetic communication helps build trust and ensures patients receive accurate recommendations and timely follow-up. This approach allows for effective virtual care while ensuring patient safety and satisfaction.

Job description

Dermatologist
Full Time or Part Time
Ohio | Hybrid
AndHealth is on a mission to radically improve access and outcomes for the most challenging chronic health conditions, with the goal of making world-class specialty care accessible and affordable to all. We partner with health systems, community health centers, and independent practices to remove barriers to care and ensure all people have access to the care they deserve.
About the Role
We're looking for a mission-driven Dermatologist to join our growing specialty care team, delivering high-quality care to patients with complex, chronic skin and autoimmune conditions.
This role is structured to evolve over time as physicians build experience within AndHealth's care model. All Dermatologists begin in a Shift-Based Specialist role that combines direct patient care with dedicated time for longitudinal patient management, multidisciplinary collaboration, and panel development activities. This structure allows physicians to contribute immediately to patient access while beginning to build the patient relationships, care coordination workflows, and clinical leadership capabilities that define long-term success within the model.
As physicians gain experience within the model and demonstrate readiness for longitudinal panel ownership, they transition into the Panel Manager role with increasing accountability for patient outcomes, treatment strategy, and clinical leadership across their panel and care team.
We've intentionally designed this progression to create a sustainable and rewarding physician experience: one that allows physicians to initially focus on direct specialty care while evolving toward deeper patient relationships, greater clinical impact, autonomy, and expanded compensation opportunity over time.
Day to day, the role is focused on the clinical work that only a physician can do: complex evaluations, treatment strategy, specialist consultations, and oversight of escalated cases. Our multidisciplinary team handles much of the administrative and coordinative work traditionally placed on specialists. Prior authorizations are managed by our team, not you. Routine follow-up and medication management are supported by Clinical Pharmacists. Care coordination across our Community Health Center partners is handled by Care Navigators.
This position reports to the Chief Medical Officer.
What Makes This Role Different
Most dermatology practices are built around throughput. Ours isn't.
Our care model is designed around multidisciplinary specialty care teams that allow physicians to practice at the top of their license. You'll work alongside Advanced Practice Providers, Clinical Pharmacists, Care Navigators, and Health Coaches who collectively support the patient journey and reduce administrative burden on physicians.
Your caseload is focused on patients with complex inflammatory and autoimmune skin disease, diagnostically challenging presentations, and cases where physician-level expertise has significant impact. A typical schedule is structured around new patient evaluations, specialist consultations, and escalated cases rather than high-volume routine visits and RVU-driven throughput.
Our hybrid care model combines virtual care with periodic in-person sessions at Community Health Center partner sites, allowing physicians to build meaningful patient relationships while expanding access to specialty care in underserved communities.
Those partnerships matter. Many of our patients have waited months to see a dermatologist. This is an opportunity to deliver specialty care to patients who otherwise may not have access to it.
What You'll Do
Clinical Responsibilities
  • Conduct new patient evaluations and specialist consultations for patients with complex dermatologic and autoimmune conditions, including inflammatory skin disease and autoimmune skin disorders.
  • Diagnose, treat, and manage chronic dermatologic conditions across both virtual and in-person care environments.
  • Provide physician-level review and oversight of escalated clinical cases from APPs, Clinical Pharmacists, and care team partners.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans integrating medical therapy, lifestyle interventions, and whole-person care approaches.
  • Educate patients on disease processes, treatment pathways, and long-term management strategies.
  • Identify co-occurring or contributing conditions that may impact diagnosis, treatment response, or patient outcomes.
  • Participate in collaborative case reviews and interdisciplinary care planning.
  • Maintain compliance with all CHC, clinical, and regulatory requirements.

Team-Based Care
  • Collaborate closely with APPs, Clinical Pharmacists, Care Navigators, and Health Coaches to deliver coordinated patient care.
  • Provide clinical guidance, mentorship, and support to APPs and pharmacy partners.
  • Contribute feedback on workflows, care protocols, and patient experience initiatives.
  • Support a culture of clinical excellence, accountability, continuous improvement, and patient-centered care.

Role Progression: From Shift-Based Specialist to Panel Manager
All Dermatologists at AndHealth begin in the Shift-Based Specialist role. In this phase, physicians focus primarily on physician-level evaluations, specialist consultations, and escalated cases requiring advanced clinical judgment. This phase allows physicians to build familiarity with our workflows, care teams, and patient population while developing within AndHealth's care model.
As physicians gain experience within the model and demonstrate readiness for longitudinal panel ownership, they transition into the Panel Manager role with increasing accountability for patient outcomes, treatment strategy, and clinical leadership across their panel and care team.
The Panel Manager role is designed to provide meaningfully expanded compensation opportunity alongside greater autonomy, longitudinal impact, and clinical leadership.
The Panel Manager role includes:
  • Expanded performance-based compensation tied to patient outcomes and panel performance.
  • Greater clinical autonomy and accountability for longitudinal patient outcomes rather than visit-level productivity.
  • Leadership within the multidisciplinary care team, including mentorship and guidance for APPs and pharmacy partners.
  • Clinical program development, including protocol design, quality initiatives, and service line evolution.
  • Relationship-building with Community Health Centers and health system partners.
  • Dedicated care team infrastructure that scales alongside panel growth, including pharmacist and care coordination support.

While the timing of progression varies based on physician readiness and organizational needs, the expectation within our model is that physicians evolve from shift-based specialist responsibilities into longitudinal panel management over time.
Education & Licensure Requirements:
  • M.D. or D.O. from an accredited medical school required
  • Board Certification in Dermatology required
  • Active, unrestricted medical license required; Ohio licensure or willingness to obtain required
  • Completion of an ACGME-accredited Dermatology residency required
  • DEA certification required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required

Other Skills or Qualifications:
  • Experience with chronic, complex dermatology patients and autoimmune conditions preferred
  • Experience training or mentoring APPs preferred
  • Comfort practicing in virtual and in-person care environments
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to explain complex concepts clearly to patients and care teams
  • Comfort working with patients from diverse backgrounds and varying levels of healthcare literacy
  • Proficiency with EHRs and healthcare technology platforms
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative, team-based care model
  • Belief in a whole-person approach to chronic disease management
  • Willingness to travel periodically to partner sites as needed

Here's what we'd like to offer you:
  • Equal investment and support for our people and patients.
  • A fun and ambitious growing environment with a culture that takes on important things, takes risks, and learns quickly.
  • The ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation, and conscientiousness, and find joy in working together.
  • A team of highly skilled, incredibly kind, and welcoming employees, every one of whom has something unique to offer.
  • We know that the overall success of our business is a collaborative effort, and we strive to provide ongoing opportunities for our employees to learn and grow, both personally and professionally.
  • Full-time employees are eligible to participate in our benefits package which includes Medical, Dental, Vision Insurance, Paid time off, Short- and Long-Term Disability, 401k match and more.

Additional Requirements:
  • Tuberculosis (TB) Screening: Documentation of a negative screening conducted within the last 12 months.
  • Hepatitis B: Proof of a completed vaccine series or positive blood titers from within the last 12 months.
  • Measles, Mumps, & Rubella (MMR): Proof of a completed vaccine series or positive blood titers from within the last 12 months.
  • Varicella (Chickenpox): Proof of vaccination, documented medical history of the disease, or positive blood titers from within the last 12 months.
  • Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis): Documentation of a booster administered within the last 10 years.
  • Influenza: Proof of vaccination for the current flu season.
  • COVID-19: Documentation of primary vaccine series and any boosters administered.
  • General: Additional health requirements may be requested as necessary.
