What does a virtual counselor do?

As a virtual counselor, your responsibilities are to provide remote support for your clients in a specialized field, such as academic advice, legal guidance, or emotional therapy. You may use a webcam, online portal, or phone to help clients with a variety of physical, mental, and emotional needs. Many aspects of this job vary based on the type of counseling you provide. For example, academic counselors may focus on career advice while legal counselors can help individuals determine whether or not they have a case worth pursuing in court. Some virtual counselors work from home, while other professionals provide remote guidance from an office or care facility.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual counselor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Counselor, you need a background in counseling or psychology, appropriate licensing or certification, and experience with mental health assessments. Familiarity with telehealth platforms, secure video conferencing tools, and electronic record-keeping systems is typically required. Strong active listening, empathy, and digital communication skills help build trust and rapport with clients remotely. These skills are crucial for delivering effective support, ensuring confidentiality, and maintaining high standards of care in a virtual environment.

What is a virtual counselor?

Virtual counselors are licensed mental health professionals who provide counseling services through online platforms, such as video calls, chat, or phone. They work with clients remotely to address emotional, psychological, or behavioral issues, offering support and guidance similar to traditional in-person counseling. Virtual counselors often help with topics like stress, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and personal growth, making mental health support more accessible and convenient.

How does a virtual counselor typically collaborate with other mental health professionals in a remote setting?

Virtual Counselors often work as part of a multidisciplinary team, regularly coordinating with psychiatrists, social workers, and case managers through virtual meetings and secure communication platforms. Effective collaboration involves sharing client progress, discussing treatment plans, and making joint decisions about care, all while maintaining client confidentiality. Building strong digital communication skills is essential, and most organizations provide structured protocols to ensure seamless teamwork and high-quality client support.

Job description

Job Category: Human Resources
Requisition Number: LIFEC002013
Description

ORGANIZATIONAL LIFE COACH

Because our people deserve someone who gives a shit.

West Bend, WI * Full-Time * People & Culture * License Required

At Delta Defense, we expect a lot from our team. That's not a warning -- it's a value. We run toward hard things. and sometimes hard things run toward us. That's where you come in.

Non-negotiable requirement: Active clinical licensure is required to apply.

  • You must hold one of the following licenses in good standing. No exceptions -- this role is authorized to diagnose and treat mental health and substance use disorders. PsyD, LCSW, LPC

High volume caseload:

  • This role serves a large, fast-moving organization. You'll manage a significant individual caseload alongside group programming, leader support, and org-wide initiatives. If you thrive under pressure and can triage without dropping the ball, read on.

Public speaking is part of this job -- in person and on screen:

  • You'll present at company-wide meetings, lead virtual and in-person training sessions, and show up in front of large groups regularly. Comfort behind a mic isn't a nice-to-have here. It's how you make an impact at scale.
What you'll do:
  • Provide one-on-one counseling for mental health and substance abuse โ€” confidential, non-judgmental, and real.
  • Lead skills-based training sessions that actually help people navigate stress, burnout, and life.
  • Deliver virtual and in-person presentations to large groups โ€” including company-wide meetings and culture events.
  • Show up weekly on the Delta Culture channel with resources that move the needle on wellbeing.
  • Partner with leaders and teams on relationship dynamics, communication, and performance health.
  • Facilitate New Employee Culture Training โ€” shape how people enter this place.
  • Connect employees to family, caregiver, and mental health resources when life gets complicated.
  • Step in for crisis intervention โ€” because sometimes urgency is the job.
  • Track non-PHI data to make the organization measurably healthier over time.
What you bring:
  • Active PsyD, LCSW, or LPC licensure โ€” see above. This is the starting line, not a differentiator.
  • Masterโ€™s or graduate degree in social work, psychology, or counseling with 5+ years of clinical experience.
  • Proven ability to manage a high caseload without burning out or burning bridges.
  • Demonstrated comfort and experience with public speaking โ€” virtual and in person, small groups and large audiences.
  • Strong clinical ethics and a locked-down approach to confidentiality.
  • Growth-minded, mission-aligned, and not easily rattled.
  • Someone who genuinely believes in the right of responsible Americans to protect themselves and their families.
Why you'll love this role:
  • Help people grow in a mission-driven business environment where your focus is on coaching and developmentโ€”not navigating insurance requirements or clinical documentation.
  • Partner with highly motivated, engaged employees who are invested in their personal and professional growth.
  • Apply organizational psychology in meaningful ways to strengthen individuals, teams, and the organization.
  • Design and deliver coaching resources, workshops, and development programs that have a lasting impact.
  • Expand your own expertise through continuous learning and the opportunity to shape innovative approaches to employee development.
  • Join a values-driven culture where continuous improvement isn't just encouragedโ€”it's how we operate.
  • Enjoy a consistent Mondayโ€“Friday schedule with no routine evenings or weekends, supporting a healthy work-life balance.

โ€œWe donโ€™t do anything halfway. We show up with purpose, follow through, and hold the line on the details others ignore.โ€ That includes how we take care of our own.

BUILT DIFFERENT. IN EVERY WAY.

Complacency Kills โ€ข Growth Mindset โ€ข We Give a Shit โ€ข Progress Over Perfection โ€ข Lead with Humility โ€ข Thereโ€™s No โ€œSomeone Elseโ€

Why work at Delta Defense?

Because culture mattersโ€”and ours is legit.

  • Fast-paced, mission-driven, and genuinely fun
  • #25 on The Wall Street Journalโ€™s 2025 Top 100 Americaโ€™s Most Loved Workplaces
  • Competitive base salary and eligibility in company incentive bonus plan
  • 23 Days of Personal Time Off, 8 Company Holidays, plus paid day of Volunteer Service annually
  • Robust Insurance Coverage Options: Medical, Dental, Vision, HSA, FSA, Life, STD, & LTD
