What is a virtual computer?

Virtual computers, also known as virtual machines (VMs), are software-based emulations of physical computers. They run operating systems and applications just like a real computer, but are hosted on a physical machine using virtualization technology. This allows multiple virtual computers to operate on a single physical server, providing flexibility, scalability, and isolation for different computing tasks. Virtual computers are widely used in cloud computing, software testing, and server consolidation.

What does a virtual computer technician do?

As a Virtual Computer Technician, your typical day involves remotely diagnosing and troubleshooting hardware and software issues for clients or internal teams. You may assist users via chat, phone, or ticketing systems, install and update software, and perform routine maintenance tasks like virus scans and system backups. Collaboration with other IT specialists is common, particularly for escalated technical problems or to coordinate large-scale updates. Staying organized and responsive is key to managing multiple support requests efficiently in a remote setting.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a virtual computer technician?

To thrive as a Virtual Computer Technician, you need strong proficiency in computer hardware, operating systems, and troubleshooting, typically supported by a degree in IT or related certifications like CompTIA A+ or Microsoft Certified: Modern Desktop Administrator Associate. Familiarity with remote support tools, virtualization platforms (such as VMware or Hyper-V), and ticketing systems is essential in this role. Excellent problem-solving abilities, patience, and strong communication skills distinguish top performers in virtual technical support. These skills ensure efficient remote issue resolution, minimize downtime, and maintain a high level of client satisfaction.

What is the difference between Virtual Computer vs Virtual Network Technician?

AspectVirtual ComputerVirtual Network Technician

Job description

Job Description
At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We're turning today's impossible into tomorrow's standard -from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.
Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.
The Role
The advancement of virtual tools has improved the way hardware and software can be optimized in vehicle design. As a Senior Virtual Hardware Model Engineer, you have the unique opportunity to shape GM's future by partnering cross functionally to develop models that unlock our ability to optimize design parameters within hardware components. In this role, you will lead development of select models in collaboration with suppliers, product development engineers, and other systems, software, and virtual teams.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities)
  • Develop high-fidelity component plant models in MATLAB/Simulink that mathematically emulate the electrical, mechanical/physics, and software interfaces of GVHE hardware components.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally (Tech Specialists, DREs, VDDV, SIL, CoSim, suppliers) to understand hardware designs, control strategies, and boundary conditions, and translate them into clear modeling requirements.
  • Implement plant models in a form suitable for use in GM CoSim environments (e.g., FMU export), ensuring correct I/O definitions, signal naming, and execution behavior.
  • Use supplier specifications, design data, and physical test/bench/vehicle results to parameterize, correlate, and continuously improve model fidelity.
  • Support integration of component plant models into larger system and vehicle-level co-simulation environments, working closely with simulation integration and CoSim architecture teams.
  • Leverage plant models as virtual harness/component testers to confirm performance, run what-if studies, and explore fault and edge-case behavior before hardware is available.
  • Document modeling assumptions, limitations, calibration parameters, and validation results to enable reuse and traceability across programs.
  • Lead development and maintenance of model requirements documentation (Appendix C11, C12), with technical leadership in developing component plant model requirements, test needs, and deliverables are clearly specified and up to date.
  • Contribute to standard methods, libraries, and best practices for component plant modeling within GVHE, mentoring peers and helping scale the capability across programs
  • Own system-level modeling strategy across multiple components/domains (e.g., closures, thermal, chassis), including how component plant models roll up into integration/system models.
  • Define and drive standards and best practices for model architecture, naming, fidelity levels, correlation methods, and validation criteria across programs.
  • Lead model correlation and validation strategy: decide which tests/data are needed, set acceptance thresholds, and arbitrate trade-offs between fidelity and runtime.

Your Skills and Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Math, Physics, Computer Science, or other relevant degree
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in product development, systems engineering, or work related to software/hardware connectivity. Preferred experience in translating physical phenomena into mathematical/Simulink models (electrical, mechanical, and software I/O).
  • Proficiency with Matlab/Simulink or similar software that uses code-based logic for model-based simulation.
  • Track record of delivering complex multi-domain models (coupled electrical-mechanical-software behavior) into SIL/HIL/CoSim workflows.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Skilled and proficient with a variety of field's concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Extensive personal experience and discernment to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks. Lead and likely direct the work of others. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected
