Boston University
Founded in 1839, Boston University (BU) is a leading private research university located in the heart of Boston, Massachusetts. With more than 37,000 students from all 50 states and over 140 countries, BU is one of the largest private universities in the United States and a major employer in the Boston area. The University's 17 schools and colleges span a broad range of disciplines across the Charles River, Fenway, and Medical Campuses, as well as a global network of study abroad programs in more than 30 cities worldwide.
BU is recognized for its commitment to academic excellence, impactful research, and global engagement. Faculty across the University are leaders in their fields, advancing interdisciplinary scholarship and securing significant sponsored research funding each year.
Under the leadership of President Melissa Gilliam, Boston University is advancing a strategic vision focused on academic excellence, innovation, community impact, and global leadership. The University is committed to fostering an inclusive and collaborative environment, strengthening connections across disciplines, and preparing students to contribute meaningfully to a rapidly changing world.
The Opportunity
BU created the investment office in 2007 with the goal of building a best-in-class investment operation. In 2011, after the inaugural CIO, Ms. Peedin, left to become the CIO of her alma mater, Lila Hunnewell became the second CIO. Previously, Ms. Hunnewell spent 20 years advising endowments at Cambridge Associates after beginning her career in investment banking.
The BU investment team manages a diversified global portfolio with approximately $4 billion in assets. As the investment experts for the University, the team has a high degree of investment autonomy. The investment office looks to maximize risk-adjusted returns within the context of the University's overall strategy and financial condition.
The investment office at Boston University seeks a skilled investment professional, with Privates experience, to join its team. While all the investment office's team members are generalists, the senior members may have specialized expertise in one or more areas and/or asset classes. To manage the portfolio in an integrated fashion and focus on directing the marginal dollars to the best opportunities, all team members contribute to the investment process, discussions and decisions across the entire portfolio. Ideal candidates will be those who enjoy working on a team, discussing investment ideas developed from rigorous, data-driven-analytical work and qualitative assessment, and sharing their knowledge with colleagues. The investment team currently comprises three Directors, one Associate Director, two Associates, three Analysts, all reporting to the CIO. The CIO reports to the President of the University.
This new hire will be a key senior member of the team, expected to work closely with the most-Privates-oriented Investment Director to affect a smooth transfer of responsibilities and relationships over the next 12-18 months, while also pro-actively contributing to generalist investment activities. The position is located in Boston, Massachusetts; global travel, with team members or independently, will be required. Compensation is commensurate with experience, with a base salary range of $350,000 - $750,000 annually, with a bonus opportunity. Investment office members have the option to work remotely 2 days a week post an initial integration period.
Required Skills
The ideal candidate for this opportunity will have the following qualifications and experience:
• Demonstrated investment judgment and curiosity
• Working knowledge of portfolio construction and management
• Expertise in Privates, including a network of managers and fellow investors
• Demonstrated track record in investment manager evaluation (due diligence, selection and monitoring)
• A broad approach to evaluating risks and informing investment decisions
• Experience (a) developing and presenting investment materials to multiple constituents (investment office, investment committee and other University constituents) and (b) responding to audience questions
• Membership on a team whose shared responsibility is a work product that requires input from and the cooperation of all members
• At least 10+ years of relevant investment experience
• MBA and/or CFA
Personal and Professional Characteristics:
• Desire to be an integral member of the investment office helping to further enhance its reputation as a sophisticated global investor and supportive partner
• Committed to the team's data-informed decision-making processes
• Informed investment view and philosophy; willingness to "think outside the box"
• Ability to synthesize information to make a concise presentation (verbal or written)
• Ability to work independently and be a team player - not a loner
• Ability to maintain mutually respectful relationships with investment managers
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Responsible, organized and timely professional
• Willingness to share knowledge and teach/mentor colleagues
• A sense of humor
• Unquestioned integrity and dedication
