Job description

Position Summary:Under the general direction of the Sr. Communications Specialist, this position provides the City with overall communications and marketing support, assisting with the dissemination of accurate information about City initiatives, events, and incidents through media and other outlets.Essential Job Functions:
  • Produces original content and manages the creation, production, and dissemination of publications for public education and administration purposes, including social media posts, monthly newsletters, reports, brochures, and exhibits.
  • Coordinates public communication with media sources; prepares materials as necessary.
  • Manages the creation and selection of photography and videos for print and electronic communications.
  • Assists with training City personnel on media relations, website management, and social media.
  • Coordinates public relations activities for departments as needed, at the direction of the Sr. Communications Specialist.
  • Maintains the social media presence for the City in accordance with City Policies.
  • Corresponds with the public on behalf of the City; facilitates meetings and participates in problem-solving as necessary; responds to inquiries from the public.
  • Collaboratively manages and coordinates creation and update of web content.
  • Assists in the coordination of special events and special media events.
  • Researches, summarizes, and analyzes information in relation to media inquiries, City policies, ordinances, code, and Council Meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
  • Knowledge of current principles, techniques, and objectives of public information, communication, and public relations programs.
  • Proficiency in Media tactics, including interview techniques and preparation.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at the same time and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in basic photography, video editing, and social media management, as well as a standard knowledge of office and graphic design software.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of internal and external customers.
  • Ability to perform detailed work accurately and independently in compliance with stringent time limits with minimal direction and supervision.
  • Ability to prioritize duties to accomplish a high volume of work product while adapting to constant changes in priority.
  • Knowledge of City policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Knowledge of local government organization and its departmental operating requirements.
  • Experience with social media management on a variety of platforms.
  • Ability to analyze and prepare organizational and functional reports from research data.
  • General knowledge of standard office procedures, practices, and equipment.
  • Excellent decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to work the allocated hours of the position.
Education, Experience, Licensing, and Certifications:
  • Bachelorโ€™s Degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or related field. 
  • Previous journalism, communications, and/or public affairs experience preferred. 
  • Must pass background and criminal history checks.
