What is a video game tester?

Video Game Testers, also known as Quality Assurance (QA) testers, are professionals who play video games in development to identify bugs, glitches, and other issues before the game is released to the public. They follow specific test plans, document any errors they find, and provide feedback to developers to ensure the final product is polished and functional. Their work is crucial for delivering a smooth gameplay experience and maintaining the quality standards of the gaming industry.

What does a video game tester do?

Video game testers play through a new video game as a user and provide feedback to the designers and developers involved in the game's production. As a video game tester, you go through each level of the game, playing just like a consumer. You may be asked to write bug reports for issues experienced while testing, such as glitches or odd events that occur during the game, using proper grammar and a professional tone. You are also asked for your honest opinion on specific details of the game; this requires you to focus on these aspects and communicate feedback regarding these things to the design and development team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a video game tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Video Game Tester, you need strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and a solid understanding of game mechanics, often supported by a high school diploma or relevant coursework. Familiarity with bug tracking systems like JIRA, testing documentation, and various gaming platforms is commonly required. Excellent communication, patience, and teamwork are vital soft skills for providing clear feedback and collaborating with developers. These skills ensure games are thoroughly tested, bugs are accurately reported, and the final product meets quality standards for players.

What are some common challenges faced by video game testers during the quality assurance process?

Video game testers often encounter challenges such as identifying and reproducing elusive bugs, working with tight deadlines before a game's release, and communicating issues clearly with developers and designers. The work can be repetitive, as testers may need to replay the same section of a game multiple times to ensure all issues are documented and fixed. Additionally, adapting to frequent game updates and evolving testing protocols requires flexibility and strong attention to detail.

Both roles require attention to detail and familiarity with testing processes, but the Video Game Tester is more specialized in gaming experiences.

Can you get paid to test video games?

Video game testers are paid professionals who evaluate games for bugs, glitches, and overall quality. They typically work for game development companies or testing firms and may need specific skills or certifications; pay varies based on experience and project scope.

Social Video Producer

Synthesia Limited

New York, NY โ€ข On-site

$135K - $137K/yr

Full-time

Re-posted 6 days ago

Job description

Synthesia is the world's leading AI video platform for business, used by over 90% of the Fortune 100. Founded in 2017, the company is headquartered in London, with offices and teams across Europe and the US.
As AI continues to shape the way we live and work, Synthesia develops products to enhance visual communication and enterprise skill development, helping people work better and stay at the center of successful organizations.
Following our recent Series E funding round, where we raised $200 million, our valuation stands at $4 billion. Our total funding exceeds $530 million from premier investors including Accel, NVentures (Nvidia's VC arm), Kleiner Perkins, GV, and Evantic Capital, alongside the founders and operators of Stripe, Datadog, Miro, and Webflow.
About the role
Most people think AI is coming for their job. We think it's coming for the boring parts of it.
Our social media team acts as an owned media arm for Synthesia. We're looking to add an experienced video editor to help us stand out in the feed. We need someone with taste and isn't afraid to break the B2B format.
You will work alongside a talented social team creating social first videos for LinkedIn, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube Shorts, and beyond. You'll play a key role in shaping how Synthesia shows up on social, from skits, product drops, and launch teasers to everyday social media campaigns.
Location: New York or London
Hybrid (3 days in office)
Why Synthesia
Imagine joining Airbnb, Stripe, or Figma when they had product-market fit, but the world hadn't completely realized it yet. That's where Synthesia is today. We hire the smartest, kindest, and most unrelenting people and let them do their best work, without distractions.
Learn more about our culture and principles here.
Must-Have Skills & Experience
  • Video editing portfolio that stands out. You understand formats but you bring your own taste while working within and around our brand guidelines.
  • Can shoot. Pick up a camera and capture with a unique pov. You're comfortable shooting with creators, our founder, internal spokespeople. You can direct, stovepipe and get people to feel natural on camera.
  • Social-first editor. You've edited for organic social. You know the first 3 seconds matter more than the last 30. You understand why a TikTok edits different than a YouTube Short.
  • Motion design basics. After Effects, Figma, whatever. You can add movement without it looking like its stock.
  • You have ideas. Watch footage and suggest a different open. Spot that a moment works better as a standalone clip. Add direction, instead of taking orders.
  • Platform literacy. TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube Shorts, Reels. You know how the game is played, but you don't let the audience catch on.
  • Seasoned mentality. No hand-holding needed. You know when something isn't working and you say it. You ship when it's ready.
Some extra skills that would be awesome:
  • Experience using GenAI tools (e.g: Google Veo3, Pika, etc..).
  • Design skills
  • B2B or Saas experience
