What is a video game tester?

Video Game Testers, also known as Quality Assurance (QA) testers, are professionals who play video games in development to identify bugs, glitches, and other issues before the game is released to the public. They follow specific test plans, document any errors they find, and provide feedback to developers to ensure the final product is polished and functional. Their work is crucial for delivering a smooth gameplay experience and maintaining the quality standards of the gaming industry.

What does a video game tester do?

Video game testers play through a new video game as a user and provide feedback to the designers and developers involved in the game's production. As a video game tester, you go through each level of the game, playing just like a consumer. You may be asked to write bug reports for issues experienced while testing, such as glitches or odd events that occur during the game, using proper grammar and a professional tone. You are also asked for your honest opinion on specific details of the game; this requires you to focus on these aspects and communicate feedback regarding these things to the design and development team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a video game tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Video Game Tester, you need strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and a solid understanding of game mechanics, often supported by a high school diploma or relevant coursework. Familiarity with bug tracking systems like JIRA, testing documentation, and various gaming platforms is commonly required. Excellent communication, patience, and teamwork are vital soft skills for providing clear feedback and collaborating with developers. These skills ensure games are thoroughly tested, bugs are accurately reported, and the final product meets quality standards for players.

What are some common challenges faced by video game testers during the quality assurance process?

Video game testers often encounter challenges such as identifying and reproducing elusive bugs, working with tight deadlines before a game's release, and communicating issues clearly with developers and designers. The work can be repetitive, as testers may need to replay the same section of a game multiple times to ensure all issues are documented and fixed. Additionally, adapting to frequent game updates and evolving testing protocols requires flexibility and strong attention to detail.

What is the difference between Video Game Tester vs Quality Assurance Tester?

AspectVideo Game TesterQuality Assurance Tester
CredentialsHigh school diploma or equivalent; gaming knowledgeHigh school diploma; attention to detail
Work EnvironmentGame development studios, remote testingSoftware companies, game studios
Industry UsagePrimarily in gaming industryBroader software and gaming industries

While both roles involve testing software, a Video Game Tester primarily focuses on playing games to find bugs and provide feedback, often with a passion for gaming. A Quality Assurance Tester has a broader scope, ensuring overall software quality, including games, and may work on various software products. Both roles require attention to detail and familiarity with testing processes, but the Video Game Tester is more specialized in gaming experiences.

Are video game tester jobs real?

Yes, video game tester jobs are real positions in the gaming industry. They involve playing games to identify bugs and provide feedback, often requiring knowledge of gaming and attention to detail. However, some opportunities may be scams, so it is important to verify the legitimacy of the employer before applying.

How much money do video game testers make?

Video game testers typically earn between $10 and $20 per hour, with annual salaries ranging from around $20,000 to $50,000 depending on experience, location, and employer. Entry-level testers often start at the lower end, while experienced testers or those working for larger companies may earn higher wages. Some testers are paid per project or receive benefits based on full-time employment.

Is it hard to become a video game tester?

Becoming a video game tester generally requires attention to detail, good communication skills, and a passion for gaming. While some companies prefer candidates with prior experience or knowledge of testing tools, entry-level positions are often available, and the role can serve as a stepping stone to a career in game development.
