SUMMARY

Welltower is seeking a strategic, financially sophisticated executive to lead the company’s enterprise risk management and insurance function. The Vice President, Risk Management and Insurance will oversee enterprise risk and risk financing strategy, including global insurance and captive programs, and provide leadership in the identification, assessment, mitigation, and transfer of risk. This leader will partner Legal, Finance, Investments, Asset Management, Operations, Development, and other business functions to protect company assets, support informed business decisions, and optimize total cost of risk. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in complex insurance and risk financing structures, captive insurance, claims oversight, and executive‑level stakeholder management. This position can be based in Toledo, OH, Dallas, TX, or New York, NY.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Enterprise Risk Management and Strategic Leadership
  • Develop and execute the enterprise risk management and insurance strategy aligned with the company’s business objectives, risk appetite, capital strategy, and global growth plans.
  • Establish enterprise risk governance frameworks to identify, assess, monitor, and mitigate material risks while embedding risk management into strategic business decisions.
  • Serve as the executive advisor to senior leadership on enterprise risk, insurance strategy, emerging exposures, and risk financing decisions.
  • Lead and develop the Risk Management & Insurance team while maintaining effective governance, policies, reporting, and executive communications.
Insurance Program Strategy, Placement, and Claims Oversight
  • Oversee the design, placement, negotiation, renewal, and administration of all insurance programs, including property, general and professional liability, directors and officers, cyber, pollution, automobile, workers’ compensation, and other executive and specialty risk lines, establishing appropriate coverage, limits, retentions, and program structures.
  • Lead broker and carrier selection, renewal marketing, and complex negotiations to achieve competitive terms, appropriate coverage, financial efficiency, and alignment with business requirements.
  • Provide executive oversight of significant and complex claims, including escalation strategy, reserve evaluation, coverage interpretation, settlement posture, and coordination with internal and external counsel.
  • Manage strategic relationships with operators, business partners, brokers, carriers, reinsurers, captive managers, actuarial advisors, regulators, auditors, and other third parties regarding insurance requirements, coverage, claims, loss control, and company‑sponsored risk programs.
  • Oversee insurance diligence and risk allocation for acquisitions, dispositions, developments, financings, joint ventures, and other strategic transactions.
Captive, Risk Financing, and Financial Leadership
  • Lead the strategy, structure, governance, and ongoing management of the company’s captive insurance program(s), ensuring alignment with enterprise risk, financial objectives, and long‑term program sustainability.
  • Evaluate and implement opportunities to optimize captive utilization, risk retention, reinsurance, coverage, and alternative risk financing strategies to improve capital efficiency and total cost of risk.
  • Oversee captive financial performance and regulatory compliance, including capitalization, reserving, premium allocation, liquidity, and dividend strategy.

  • Outstanding negotiation and relationship‑management skills with brokers, carriers, reinsurers, operators, regulators, and senior internal stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex risk matters to executive and board‑level audiences.
  • Experience supporting international operations and managing risk across multiple jurisdictions is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in commercial real estate, healthcare, seniors housing, or another asset‑intensive and operationally complex industry is strongly preferred.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

A minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible experience in risk management and insurance, including significant leadership responsibility, is required. A bachelor’s degree in risk management, finance, business, law, or a related field is required. An advanced degree (MBA, JD, or master’s) and relevant professional designations are preferred.
