About the Role

The Vice President, Clinical Trial Operations (VP CTO) provides strategic, operational, and executive leadership for all clinical research conducted across City of Hope’s national system. This leader oversees systemwide clinical research implementation, standardization, care delivery, workflow optimization, and performance improvement to ensure every patient—regardless of location—has access to high-quality clinical trials.

As a successful candidate, you will:

Operational Strategy & Leadership

  • Oversee systemwide implementation of standardized workflows, technology integration, and operational processes that support clinical trial growth and excellence.
  • Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including disease program leaders, PIs, foundation leadership, and sponsors.
  • Guide systemwide strategic planning, goal setting, reporting, and process alignment to support clinical research expansion.
  • Increase clinical research accrual through aligned processes, high-quality operations, and effective communication across the enterprise.

Personnel Leadership

  • Recruit, develop, and oversee clinical research personnel systemwide, ensuring adequate staffing, training, licensure, and performance standards.
  • Develop staffing plans and manage performance improvement initiatives for all direct and indirect reports
  • Provide coaching, development, and advancement opportunities for high-performing team members.

Clinical Research Execution

  • Establish and maintain systemwide standards for trial execution, patient safety, protocol compliance, and accurate data collection.
  • Ensure strong relationships across clinical research teams and support high-quality patient care.
  • Identify and implement SOPs and quality standards across research operations.

Fiscal & Budget Oversight

  • Develop and manage budgets, monitor financial performance, and identify opportunities for improved efficiency and cost savings.
  • Collaborate on new programs and services that support the growth of clinical research across the system.

Training, Quality & Performance Improvement

  • Lead the development of systemwide onboarding, training, and continuous education programs for clinical research staff.
  • Develop performance metrics and drive quality improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure adherence to regulatory standards and lead systemwide performance improvement activities.
  • Analyze data, define outcomes, and recommend strategies that improve patient experience and operational efficiency.

Clinical Research Care Coordination Oversight

  • Advance a culture of excellence in research practice and ensure seamless coordination of clinical research activity across all COH sites.
  • Align trial openings with population needs and site resources.
  • Build strategic partnerships with investigators, physicians, sponsors, cancer center leadership, and cross-functional departments.

Your qualifications should include:

Minimum Education

  • Master’s degree in Nursing, Business Management, or related field

Minimum Experience

  • 15+ years of oncology clinical research experience, focused on clinical trials operations and patient-centered excellence.
  • 15+ years of clinical trials management experience in an academic setting.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary clinical research teams.
  • Deep knowledge of FDA regulations, GCP, HIPAA, NCI CCSG guidelines, and clinical research operations..

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with Lean, Six Sigma, PDCA, and performance improvement methodologies.

Proven leadership, project management, analytic, and communication skills.
