REPORTS TO:ย PRESIDENT OFย THEย COLLEGEย ย 

STATUS: FULL-TIME,ย EXEMPT, SALARIEDย 

Lake Erie College, a small, co-educational, four-year, independent liberal arts collegeย locatedย in Painesville, OH, 30 miles east of Cleveland, invites applications for the full-time position ofย Vice President of Finance.ย ย ย 

Dedicated to delivering high-quality higher education and community engagement, weย are currently in a strategic turnaroundย phaseย andย theย Vice President of Finance will be a key driver of our financial stability and long-term sustainability. This is a mission-critical leadership role with significant accountability to ourย board ofย directors, bondholders, and external stakeholders.ย The Vice President of Finance will provide strategic leadership and oversight of LECโ€™s financial operations and long-term fiscal health,ย leadingย all finance and accounting functions;ย financial planningย andย analysis;ย and reporting to bondholders and theย board. This is a high-stakes assignment requiring a seasoned leader withย experience in turnaround environments, complex debt and covenant reporting, and highereducation finance or comparable sector experience. The role will partner closely with the President and senior leadership team toย build.ย financial strength, enhanceย transparency,ย maintainย robust financial controls, and support the institutionโ€™s mission and growth.ย 

RESPONSIBILITIES:ย 

  • Leads the development, execution, monitoring, and communication of the annual operating budget, multi-year financial plan, and long-term capital model.ย 

  • Drives cash flow forecasting, scenario analysis, liquidity management, debt servicing, covenant compliance, and bond-holder reporting.ย 

  • Ensuresย timelyย andย accurateย financial statements, management reports, and dashboards for senior leadership, theย board ofย directors, and external stakeholders (auditors, lenders, bondholders).ย 

  • Supervises all accounting operations, including general ledger, month-end/quarter-end/year-end close, accounts payable, accounts receivable, bursar, payroll, and related functions.ย 

  • Establishes andย maintainsย robust internal controls, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with GAAP, regulatory requirements, higher-education norms, and lender covenants.ย 

  • Partners with senior leadership to align financial and operational data, ensuring cost drivers are accurately reflected in financial plans and reporting while oversightย residesย with respectiveย cabinet members.ย 

  • Serves as the finance liaison to theย board ofย directorsย (particularly theย audit/financeย committee) and external auditors, bond counsel, and lenders; presents finance reports, explains variances, proposes corrective actions, and highlights risk areas.ย 

  • Leads orย supportsย strategic initiatives that enhance revenue diversification, cost optimization, efficiency improvements, and long-term financial sustainability.ย 

  • Builds, develops, mentors, and manages a high-performing finance team, fostering accountability, transparency, continuous improvement, and professional growth.ย 

  • Ensures systems and data infrastructure provideย timely,ย accurateย reporting and analysis; drives improvements in financial systems, automation, KPIs, and business intelligence capabilities.ย 

  • Monitors higher-education sector and regulatory trends (e.g., tuition/aid dynamics, enrollment, state/federal funding, bond markets) and makes recommendations to the President andย board to adapt strategy accordingly.ย 

  • Oversees institutional insurance programsโ€”including liability, property, cyber, D&O, and student-related policiesโ€”and ensuresย appropriate coverageย levels, manages renewals, and collaborates with external brokers to mitigate institutional risk and control premium costs.ย 

FIRST 12-18 MONTHS:ย 

  • Establishesย and communicatesย aย 3-5 yearย financial plan aligned with institutional strategy and board expectations.ย 

  • Demonstratesย improvement in key financial metrics: e.g., cash flow, unrestricted reserves, debt service coverage ratio, cost per student, accounts receivable aging.ย 

  • Strengthensย internalย controls:ย reducesย audit findings, improvesย timeliness and accuracy of financialย close ,ย improved forecasting accuracy.ย 

  • Enhancesย transparency and quality of information available to theย board and bondholders, with regular,ย clearย and actionable reporting.ย 

  • Continuesย to buildย the departmentย team to support growth and stability, including refinement of roles, performance metrics, crosstraining,ย and succession planning.ย 

  • Managesย the institution through at least one bond/funding covenant review or audit cycle with favorable outcomes.ย 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & KEY COMPETENCIES:ย 

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related fieldย required; MBA,ย MAcc, or CPAย stronglyย preferred.ย 

  • Minimum 10 years of progressive financial leadership experience in higher education, nonprofit, private college, or similar environment, with at least 5 years in a senior finance executive role (e.g., CFO, VP Finance).ย 

  • Demonstrated experience in turnaround, restructuring, or complex debt/bondย environments,includingย covenant management, bondholderย reportingย and lender relationships.ย 

  • Strong experience overseeing full financeย function: accounting, budgeting, forecasting, payroll, AP/AR, bursarย functionsย and audit.ย 

  • Deep knowledge of GAAP, notforprofit accounting, federal/state regulations applicable to higher education, and financial controls.ย 

  • Exceptional analytical and strategic thinking skillsโ€”able to translate data into actionable insights,ย recommendationsย and plans.ย 

  • Strong communicationย skills withย theย ability to present sophisticated financial information to non-financial stakeholders (board members, bondholders,ย lenders) in a clear, compelling manner.ย 

  • Proven leadership skills: building and developingย healthyย teams, driving change, working in a dynamic environment with multipleย stakeholdersย and competing priorities.ย 

  • High levelย of integrity, transparency, accountability,ย and professionalism.ย 

  • Experience with ERP/financial systems (e.g., Banner, Workday, Ellucian, Oracle/PeopleSoft) and advanced Excel/BI tools preferred.ย
