Vice President of Accounting - Construction
Jeffersonville, IN • On-site
Full-time

Job description
Denton Floyd Real Estate Group is a vertically integrated real estate firm headquartered in Jeffersonville, Indiana, serving the Louisville metro and surrounding markets. Founded in 2008, the platform acquires, develops, builds, manages, and ultimately exits multifamily, senior living, and industrial assets through a set of in-house divisions that include Forge Construction, DF Development, Capital Markets, Vector Design Group, DF Property Management.
Forge Construction is the firm's general contracting arm, delivering ground-up multifamily, senior living, and commercial projects for both affiliated and third-party owners. Because Forge builds what the platform develops, its accounting function sits at the intersection of construction operations, development budgets, and lender and investor reporting - making this a uniquely visible seat within the organization.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Vice President of Accounting leads the accounting function for Forge Construction and some of our verticles, owning job cost accounting, work-in-progress reporting, contract billing, and financial close for the construction division. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this leader is accountable for the accuracy and timeliness of construction financials, the integrity of project cost forecasting, and the systems and controls that support a growing project portfolio.
This is a hands-on leadership role for a construction accounting professional who understands percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, retainage, change orders, and subcontractor compliance at a practitioner level - and who can translate project-level detail into decision-ready reporting for executive leadership, lenders, sureties, and ownership. The successful candidate will partner daily with project executives, project managers, and preconstruction, and will serve as the connective tissue between the field and the finance organization.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Job Cost Accounting & Project Reporting
• Own the monthly work-in-progress (WIP) schedule across all active projects, including cost-to-complete analysis, earned revenue, and over/under billings.
• Lead monthly job cost review meetings with project executives and project managers; challenge cost-to-complete assumptions and ensure margin fade is identified early and explained.
• Maintain the integrity of job cost structures, cost codes, and budget setup from contract award through project closeout.
• Oversee accounting for change orders, contingency draws, allowances, and owner-directed scope changes, ensuring proper documentation and timely recognition.
• Deliver project-level profitability reporting and variance analysis against GMP and hard-bid budgets.
Financial Reporting & Month-End Close
• Direct the monthly, quarterly, and annual close for the construction division, delivering accurate financial statements on a consistent, predictable schedule.
• Ensure revenue recognition complies with ASC 606 (percentage-of-completion) and that supporting documentation withstands audit scrutiny.
• Prepare and present divisional financial results, key metrics, and trend analysis to the CFO and executive leadership.
• Serve as primary liaison for the annual audit or review, including preparation of schedules, workpapers, and technical accounting support.
• Support annual budgeting, overhead planning, and rolling cash flow forecasting for the construction division.
Contract Billing, Collections & Cash Management
• Oversee owner billing, including AIA pay applications, schedules of values, lien waiver collection, and supporting documentation packages.
• Manage retainage tracking and release across both owner contracts and subcontracts.
• Drive accounts receivable performance and improve days sales outstanding through disciplined follow-up with owners and project teams.
• Oversee subcontractor payment applications, pay-when-paid provisions, joint check agreements, and vendor payment cadence.
• Partner with Capital Markets and Accounting/Finance on construction draw requests, lender inspections, and funding timelines for affiliated projects.
Compliance, Risk & External Relationships
• Maintain subcontractor compliance programs covering insurance certificates, W-9s, lien waivers, safety documentation, and contract execution.
• Serve as an accounting point of contact for the firm's surety, supporting bonding capacity, periodic schedule submissions, and financial statement requirements.
• Coordinate with Legal on contract terms with accounting or payment implications, including notice provisions, retainage, and claims.
• Oversee multi-state sales and use tax considerations, contractor licensing support, prevailing wage and certified payroll requirements where applicable.
• Support 1099 reporting, year-end close, and tax preparation in coordination with corporate Accounting/Finance and outside advisors.
Team Leadership & Development
• Lead, coach, and develop the construction accounting team, including project accountants, accounts payable, and billing staff.
• Establish clear performance expectations, review cadences, and development plans; build bench strength and cross-training within the function.
• Partner with Talent Acquisition and HR on staffing plans, hiring, and onboarding as the division scales.
• Model a culture of accuracy, accountability, and responsiveness to the field.
Systems, Process & Internal Controls
• Own the construction accounting technology stack, driving adoption, data integrity, and integration between accounting and project management platforms.
• Design and enforce internal controls over billing, payables, contract execution, and job cost coding.
• Identify and implement process improvements that shorten the close, reduce manual effort, and improve reporting speed to the field.
• Document policies and procedures to create repeatable, scalable practices as project volume grows.
Cross-Divisional Partnership
• Coordinate with DF Development on project budgets, development draws, and the handoff between development and construction accounting.
• Align with corporate Accounting/Finance on intercompany transactions, allocations, and consolidated reporting.
• Provide construction cost data and historical benchmarks to preconstruction and estimating to sharpen future pursuits.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field.
• Ten or more years of progressive accounting experience, including a minimum of five years in construction accounting with a general contractor, design-build firm, or specialty contractor.
• Demonstrated ownership of percentage-of-completion revenue recognition and cost-to-complete forecasting across a multi-project portfolio.
• Working knowledge of AIA billing, schedules of values, retainage, change order administration, lien waivers, and subcontractor compliance.
• Experience leading and developing an accounting team, including direct supervisory responsibility.
• Proficiency with construction ERP and job cost systems such as Sage 300 CRE, HH2 and Procore, with advanced Excel skills.
• Proven ability to communicate financial results clearly to non-financial audiences, including project teams and executive leadership.
Preferred
• CPA and/or CCIFP (Certified Construction Industry Financial Professional) designation.
• Experience within a vertically integrated real estate platform, or exposure to both owner-side development accounting and contractor-side job cost accounting.
• Familiarity with multifamily, senior living, or industrial project types.
• Experience supporting surety relationships and bonded work.
• Exposure to LIHTC, HUD, or other public and mixed-finance construction reporting requirements.
• Experience with a system implementation or conversion within a construction environment.
• Familiarity with EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System) or a comparable operating framework.
KEY COMPETENCIES
• Technical Precision - Detail-oriented without losing sight of the operational story behind the numbers.
• Field Partnership - Comfortable in the field and in the boardroom; earns credibility with project managers and superintendents.
• Forward Visibility - Sees around corners on margin risk and communicates issues early rather than at close.
• Scalability Mindset - Builds process and structure that hold up as project volume increases.
• Communication - Direct, responsive, and steady under the pressure of construction timelines.
• Ownership - Willing to go into the detail personally while still leading a team.
MEASURES OF SUCCESS - FIRST TWELVE MONTHS
• A reliable, on-time monthly close, with cost-to-complete reporting that leadership, the lender group, and the surety trust without rework.
• Project executives and project managers receive job cost reporting early enough in the month to act on it.
• Measurable improvement in billing cycle time and days sales outstanding.
• Documented policies, procedures, and controls in place across billing, payables, and job cost coding.
• A stable, well-trained accounting team with clear ownership and defined development paths.
• Clean audit or review with no significant findings.
