Job description

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking a Vice President to lead our Messaging and Streaming Services organization. This is a critical senior leadership role spanning the full breadth of AWS's real-time data movement portfolio-from open-source streaming technologies to AWS-native messaging and delivery solutions.
As VP, you will be responsible for product strategy, engineering execution, service operations, and overall business results across the entire messaging and streaming portfolio. You will own the P&L, product roadmaps, engineering development, and operational excellence for all services in scope.
This role requires a leader who can:
• Think strategically and execute relentlessly - Innovate on behalf of customers while remaining deeply connected to engineering execution. Apply relentlessly high standards to lead the development of purpose-built, large-scale systems.
• Lead at scale - Direct geographically distributed teams (Seattle, Vancouver BC, Palo Alto CA, Cambridge UK, and beyond) to build and operate next-generation high-performance streaming and messaging systems that deliver real-time ingestion, storage, processing, and delivery for large-scale applications.
• Drive the open-source and proprietary balance - Your portfolio spans open-source streaming technologies (Apache Kafka, Apache Flink, Apache ActiveMQ, RabbitMQ) and AWS-native solutions (Kinesis, SNS, SQS, Data Firehose), positioning you to own the complete data movement lifecycle.
• Manage a diverse business mix - Given the combination of heavily used, highly operational services (e.g., Kinesis Data Streams, SQS, SNS) and emerging/growing businesses (e.g., Amazon MQ, Managed Flink), this role demands strong technical depth, strong operational leadership, and the ability to drive new adoption simultaneously.
• Collaborate across AWS - Since these services are used in conjunction with many other systems, you will help customers build applications that leverage multiple AWS offerings. You will work closely with senior AWS leaders and the leaders of other AWS services, particularly within AWS Data and Analytics, AWS Serverless, and AWS Storage.
• Champion open source - Be enthusiastic about data streaming, passionate about contributing to open-source communities, and driven to solve real customer business needs at AWS scale.
The team you lead will deliver innovation that simplifies and improves the way customers build large-scale real-time and event-driven applications.
This role is also designed to develop and assess readiness for future leadership of the largest, most technically complex services at AWS (e.g., DynamoDB, Lambda, EBS, S3).
Key job responsibilities
You will own the complete messaging and streaming lifecycle across the following services:
Streaming Services:
• Amazon Managed Streaming for Apache Kafka (MSK)
• Amazon Managed Service for Apache Flink
• Amazon Kinesis Data Streams
• Amazon Data Firehose
Messaging Services:
• Amazon Simple Notification Service (SNS)
• Amazon Simple Queue Service (SQS)
• Amazon MQ (managed Apache ActiveMQ and RabbitMQ)
Together, these services enable customers to build and run applications that ingest, process, deliver, and communicate streaming and event-driven data at scale. The combined portfolio represents strong year-over-year growth, positioning this as one of the highest-impact technical leadership roles in AWS.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science (or related field) or equivalent work experience
15+ years of experience in the development of mission-critical system software, with 10+ years driving long-term engineering and product decisions at senior leadership level
Track record of delivering innovative cloud-based applications and services at scale
Proven ability to hire, develop, and retain an inclusive, high-performing organization of 400+ engineers
Experience scaling diverse, highly dynamic, and fast-growing technical and product teams across multiple geographies
Demonstrated P&L ownership and business acumen for a portfolio of services
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced degree in Computer Science or related field
A leadership position in a team delivering solutions at massive scale across multiple service lines
Experience designing and building sophisticated, fault-tolerant, distributed systems with systems-level performance constraints
Experience driving complex, cross-organizational projects across VP-level stakeholders
Experience building distributed applications with components that interact through publish/subscribe, event-based messaging, or streaming models
Experience with open-source streaming and messaging technologies such as Apache Kafka, Apache Flink, Apache ActiveMQ, RabbitMQ, or similar frameworks
Experience with AWS services including Amazon MSK, Kinesis, Firehose, Managed Flink, SNS, SQS, Amazon MQ, S3, Redshift, EMR, Glue, Athena, DynamoDB, RDS, Neptune, Lambda
Ability to write high-quality, data-driven narratives that work backwards from customer and business needs while providing visibility into technical direction, success criteria, and incremental steps to achieve success
Proven track record of operating highly available, highly scaled services with strong operational discipline
Experience balancing investment across mature, high-revenue services and emerging growth businesses
